Pfeifer House 760 River Road, Tahoe City, California 530·583·3102 www.pfeiferhouse.com
The Space The main room is Old World/Old Tahoe come to life: high peaked ceiling supported by hand-hewn cross beams and angled joists, amber wood walls and flooring, wrought iron detailing, intimate dining booths, a beckoning stone fireplace, a long and luxe rosewood bar. Two adjacent dining rooms, cozy yet ample, sustain the charming European atmosphere.
The Food Master chef and owner Franz Fassbender’s extensive menu runs the gamut of European classics from Hungarian Beef Goulash to Chateaubriand. And, yes, there is a variety of schnitzel dishes sauced to perfection and without compare this side of the Danube. The sublime steak and seafood entrees will glaze the eye as well.
The Drinks The wine list is an impressive mix of European and California varietals at reasonable prices; and a premium well, allied with an unstinting free pour, powers the cocktails. Still, a big thirst is best slaked here with a cold 17 oz. Spaten pilsner, dark Optimator, or Franziskanner hefeweisse.
Gotta Try Escargot, potato leek soup, Wiener Schnitzel, center cut fillet pepper steak, rack of spring lamb, Barvarian apple strudel.
Price Range Entrees, including soup or salad, range from $22 to $38. Children’s menu is also available.
Hours of Operation The bar opens at 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. A 40-person capacity banquet room is available by reservation.
