Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker — discomforting as a school girl’s nervous laugh — is the most outstanding feature of Christopher Nolan’s mesmerizing “Batman” sequel. From his seat atop the pit of hell, the marvelously twisted Joker pursues his diabolical heart’s desire. He’s the ultimate terrorist, wreaking havoc for the sake of watching others sink to new lows. To achieve anarchy, The Joker happily burns a mountain of money, but to worm his way into Batman’s psyche, the Joker will burrow deep into the caped crusader’s emotional world.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Mexican director, Guillermo del Toro, 44, was raised by a devoutly Catholic grandmother who believed his interest in comic book fantasy was sinful. To paraphrase a January 2007 interview on "Fresh Air," the director claimed his grandmother required him to endure mortification. She placed metal bottle caps in the lad's shoes that cut and bloodied Guillermo's feet during his walk to school. Additionally, del Toro's interest in drawing monsters twice prompted Grandma to have him exorcized. Given the result, it's safe to assume that the power of his visions grew despite his caretaker's objections.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Disgruntled superhero Hancock is a drunk who can’t fly straight. While defeating bad guys or saving the unwary, he’s prone to knock a train off its tracks, sink a ship or shave corners off tall buildings. The citizens of Los Angeles have had it and they want Hancock gone. His reasons for staying are unclear, though the warm weather favor favors Hancock’s lifestyle. Outfitted in sloppy shorts, a frayed T-shirt and filthy knit cap, drunken Hancock passes out on a city bench. When a little boy insists he get up to apprehend some very bad men, the superhero’s rudeness prompts the kid to call him precisely what he appears to be, an a--hole.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Andrew Stanton of Pixar, has the courage to rely upon a charming robot to carry 40 minutes of nearly dialog-free action. Much as “I am Legend” opens with a lonely character living through a typical day, “Wall-E” opens with its robot hero, Wall-E, engaged in his typical day. He is a waste disposal ‘bot, gathering load after load of garbage into his square torso where it is transformed into compacted cubes. Wall-E carefully stacks these trash squares into artfully conceived garbage towers.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

This somewhat pleasant film adaptation is more slapdash than slapstick. Seeing an episode of the 1960s series on which it is based (free on YouTube), confirms the zippy rhythm, punctuated by frequent one-liners, of that show's comedy. By contrast the movie gives itself over to action set pieces while tossing off the occasional sight gag.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Fifty years after C.S. Lewis wrote the Narnia series, the young adult fantasy genre has become all the rage. That's good for Narnia, a pricey proposition calling for numerous large set pieces and CGI characters in major roles. The first installment, budgeted at approximately $180 million, has taken in $750 million worldwide. The second chapter has an estimated budget of just $100 million, and is on target to take in $60 million during its opening weekend.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

Los Angeles Police Detective, Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves), personally executes the worst criminal offenders. In the film’s opening scenes, he dispatches a band of gun dealers supplementing their income by peddling child sex slaves. With Ludlow’s boss, Capt. Jack Wander (Forest Whitaker) taking the lead, the mop-up crew arrives and arranges the crime scene to make Ludlow’s killings appear justified.Write Comment (0 Comments) |
