When you need a change of scenery this summer, try “A View from Space.”

What the earth looks like from a satellite is the premise behind a hands-on, interactive exhibit at the education center in the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village.

“A View from Space is designed to introduce visitors to the latest and greatest of the Earth-observing satellites and give them an appreciation for the value of studying Earth from space,” said Heather Segale, education and outreach coordinator.

The NASA-funded exhibit will allow visitors to track a hurricane from space, study images of Earth captured by NASA’s Earth Observing System, send a satellite spinning into orbit, and chart environmental and population changes on the Earth from a satellite’s viewpoint.

The exhibit was brought to the Tahoe Center for Environemental Sciences through Truckee’s KidZone, which is a member of the museum group that put it together. KidZone will offer “Space Zone” this summer, with a spaceship from Berkeley’s Habitot Children’s Museum and a space station built by the Contractors Association of Truckee-Tahoe, according to Carol Meagher, KidZone director. Because KidZone caters to children up to age 5, the “A View from Space” exhibit was located at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences’ education center on the Sierra Nevada College campus.

The education center’s ongoing display is an interactive exhibit about Lake Tahoe’s environment and research.

The summer exhibit of “A View from Space” will end with an appearance by Eileen Collins, NASA’s only woman space shuttle captain, on Aug. 29.

“Right now we are the only place in Tahoe where families can go and learn like this — hands-on. There is so much to do here outside, with sports and recreation — and that’s great. But we hope people come here to visit us if it’s a rainy day, or even if it’s sunny,” Segale said.
