Rugged trails, beaches, epic views and clear water make Tahoe an excellent venue for off-road triathlons. It’s the reason the XTERRA USA Championships returns to Incline Village every year.

“It’s a great multi-sport destination,” said Todd Jackson, a local coordinator for XTERRA and race director for Big Blue Adventures.

XTERRA is adding a new qualifying race to the area on Saturday, June 23 in Tahoe City organized and designed by Jackson, who had been thinking about hosting a race in Tahoe City since he moved to the area three years ago.

The race will start and finish on Common’s Beach and heads onto the trails behind Tahoe City, where Jackson said the course is shaped like a “lollipop” with two loops on the course.

“It’s some of the best single-track on the North Shore,” Jackson said. “But there are also some wider sections for passing. It’s fun but challenging.”

Not only is it a great location, it’s also a great time of year to see Tahoe.

Local athletes, especially those who train specifically for XTERRAs can’t wait for the Tahoe City Race.

“I’m pretty stoked,” said Matt Chappell who lives in Truckee and usually travels to different states to compete in XTERRAs. “We’ve got the home field advantage.”

Chappell is also looking forward to racing with a lot of other Tahoe locals.

“It’s always great to race with friends,” Chappell said. “And celebrating the effort afterwards.”

Although it’s close to the location of XTERRA USA Championships and XTERRA Nevada in Incline Village the courses are not alike.

“Even though it’s in Tahoe the character is quite different,” Jackson said. There isn’t as much climbing, the area is more wooded and there is very little mileage on roads.

“From a mountain biking perspective it will be pretty sweet,” Jackson said. “The race is going to be a classic.”

And nothing tops a great race like a post-race party on the beach.
