Some people call it rafting, others call it a booze cruise. Regardless of how it’s defined, the commercial and private rafters who float down the stretch of the Truckee River from Tahoe City to River Ranch are out to have a good time.

The commercial raft companies have no policy on drinking except to prohibit glass and kegs from being taken on the river.

“It can get pretty wild down here, especially on the Fourth of July,” said Jen Shaeffer, manager of Truckee River Rafting.

The Fourth of July is traditionally one of the busiest and rowdiest weekends of the summer. The two commercial rafting companies on the Truckee River are limited by Placer County regulations to up to 100 boats each on the river at any given time.
But according to Ryan Bell, co-owner of Truckee River Raft with Mountain Air Sports, it’s the private rafters who are occupying most of the river space.

“Of those floating down the river, probably about two-thirds of them are private rafters, and one-third are with [one of the two] commercial companies,” he said, “The private sector has really exploded in the last few years.”

Although some have reservations as to the environmental impact of rafting on the river, all rafters are encouraged to pick up after their party and to leave the river canyon in better shape than they found it. The key to finishing up a fun floating trip is to be responsible, safe and friendly to your tour guide, the Truckee River.
