Lucy Isbell
Age: 53
Occupation: part-time commercial property manager and part-time photographer
Residence: I Live in Alpine Meadows
Medium: Slide film and digital photography
Heroes: Georgia O’Keefe, Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell
Masterpeice horror story: Getting up at 5 a.m. and climbing to the top of Eagle Rock in the dark. It was after a big storm and I couldn’t find the trail, so I ended up climbing straight up the side. I was up to my waist in snow and literally holding on to the bushes. I was cold and miserable, but finally, made it to the top, just as the sun was rising. Unfortunately it was a boring sunrise and I did not get rewarded for my efforts. I’ve got to try that one again, with less snow and knowing the trail.
Where to see my work: The Truckee Gallery, Plumas Bank in Tahoe City, Tahoe City Dental Group and Shine Hair Studio.
The story behind the photo: This picture is of Manarola, one of five little towns that are on the coast of the Italian Riveria. The towns collectively make up Cinque Terra. I was hoping to get a colorful dusk shot of one of the towns, and it turned out Manorola was the only one compact enough to make this photo work. It also had a hiking trail that let me get far enough from the town to capture its quaintness and beauty. I sat out on the trail with my tripod (which had broken the day before and I was sure that I couldn’t get it fixed in this little town on a Sunday, but I was really lucky to find a nice little Italian fix it man, who put it back together in five minutes). Without the tripod I wouldn’t have been able to take the long exposure necessary for this kind of photograph. I am very happy that I got exactly the shot that I was trying to take.
