The Big Blue Adventure Series returns to where it all started, North Lake Tahoe, Saturday Sept. 23, for the fifth annual Tahoe Big Blue Adventure Race. The event, which has continued to expand and evolve since its inception, will include a two-to-four-hour sprint race for beginner adventure racers. An extreme 24-hour version of the competition is set for October 7. The events have challenged adventure racers and recreational athletes from across the country since 2002 amidst rugged and beautiful terrain.
The gritty and grueling course (the series’ most breathtakingly scenic) requires approximately eight miles of kayaking on Lake Tahoe, 24 miles of mountain biking, five to eight miles of hiking/trail running, orienteering and continuous use of map and compass to navigate through the course. Finishing times ranging from six to 12 hours.
The sprint race, with less emphasis on navigation, requires two to three miles of kayaking, seven to ten miles of mountain biking and three to five miles of foot travel. The races begin and end in Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista, California.
“I live in Lake Tahoe and this is where it all began, so it’s probably obvious that this is one of my favorite races,” Todd Jackson, president of Seventh Wave Productions and series producer said. “It’s an excellent opportunity for athletes to combine a little vacation while having some challenging adventures. It’s a beautiful, quieter season up here, so the conditions for play and relaxation are ideal.”
The six to 12 hour event is open to teams of two, three or four all male, all female, or coed, as well as individuals. Teams can register through September 20, with late fees applying after September 7. Teams entering in multiple Big Blue Adventure Races are eligible for discount registration. Racers can register and find teammates at www.bigblueadventure.com.
The Big Blue Adventure Series, produced and developed by Seventh Wave Productions, has grown in popularity and success since its inception in 2002 and now includes 12 competitions, including 24-hour formats, sprint races and an off-road triathlon.
