I don’t own a pair of snow pants. There, I said it. As I sit here writing this column on my laptop from the comfort of my cozy couch, gusts of wind are swirling the piles of fresh powdery snow outside my window into four-foot-high snow drifts. Just a guess, but I think winter has finally descended upon the Sierra. And yes, I know it sounds inconceivable but I don’t own any snow pants.
As this is my first winter in Truckee I thought I’d ease into it — first buying the same puffy black down jacket that appears to be the unisex Truckee uniform, then purchasing plenty of wool scarves and mittens, and next came a new pair of snow boots.
With a winter as wussy as we’ve had thus far, I thought I had some time before making the snow pants purchase, but now with several feet of snow outside my house, I think I may have waited too long.
You see, I’m the kind of urban girl who is used to skipping around town year-long in ballerina flats, sans socks. And I wear outfits, so to speak, most days of my work week. Silly as it sounds, I know, I admit to being a total girlie-girl.
But now I have found myself in quite the fashion conundrum: Is there a way to show off your personal style when it’s dumping snow and temperatures are dipping below freezing? Or am I just a lost cause until spring?
So I decided to do a little research for the sake of this column (i.e. shopping), to see what’s trendy in the snow pant department.
There’s the basic black stand-by that belts at the waist and matches everything — always a smart buy. Let’s see, I also came across some cargo-style, low-rise pants that were practical and hip. But the biggest shocker came when I came face to face with this one-piece, pin-striped, fur-hooded, thing. It hung there all by itself on the hanger in the store and somehow appeared somewhat life-like, its arms reaching out to me, begging me to try it on.
And I would have maybe, for a good laugh. Please help me understand how and why this is a good look because I don’t get it. As cutting edge as the one-piece snowsuit might be this season, there’s no way you’re getting this city girl to sport it.
I will own a pair of snow pants by the end of the week, mind you, but I’m sticking to the basics. Now, what to wear with my new pants…
