I was made in the ’80s, baby. As I write this week’s column I felt it only made sense to rock out to the new wave hits from The Talking Heads; to pay tribute by listening to the tunes that made the ’80s so awesome.
Now I know not everyone will agree with me on this one, but what’s not to love about the decade that introduced us to Spandex and scrunchies?
And in honor of the 25th anniversary of the ski flick “Hot Dog … The Movie,” I will take you on a little trip down memory lane — when guys wore makeup and fanny packs were “totally tubular.”
Leggings — Fashion has a short cycle before same-old ideas are redesigned and marketed as new and fresh after a few decades have passed. Well, the ’80s are back in style right now in a big way.
One of the most surprising trends to be recycled: Leggings. Why, oh, why did leggings came back into the picture? They don’t work on anybody I know. How did leggings manage to make a comeback? No, I refuse to accept leggings as anything other than an extra layer of clothing worn under your snow pants.
Bangles — Oversized plastic jewelry and layers upon layers of Madonna-esque necklaces have also managed to find their way back into the world of accessories. Not such a bad trend to revive, however, beware of all the noise created by piling on all those bangles.
Boots — And there really is no way to express how much I detest ankle boots made popular by the whole pegged-pant phenomena. Similar to leggings, they are just not attractive, or for that matter, serve a purpose. Don’t your ankles get cold?
Makeup — I was checking out lipgloss at the Mac makeup counter recently when I observed something alarming. Blue eyeshadow. Yes, blue. This trend is definitely one I won’t be following this time around. Ladies, just say no.
My advice after our little blast to the past is to take the best part of the ’80s with you, but leave it at that. So suit up in your neon-bright ’80s best, sit back, and revel in the decade while watching “Hot Dog.”
