Despite heavy spring rains, local farmers are planning to kick off the Tahoe City Farmers’ Market at Commons Beach on Thursday, May 25.
The farmers’ market will offer customers fruits, vegetables, flowers, and artisan foods, all freshly picked or prepared for the market, as well as local wines and hand-crafted gift items. The market will run every week through the end of October from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Farmer Bryan Kaminsky of The Natural Trading Company, who started selling his produce at the Tahoe City Farmers’ Market in 1996, said that although he was late planting because of inclement weather, the recent warm temperatures have helped. “My crops are growing like crazy,” he said.
Kaminsky plans to bring lettuce and other greens — collards, kale, chard, bok choy and mizuna — as well as spring onions, green garlic, sunflower greens, pea shoots and basil to opening day. He expressed enthusiasm at returning for the season. “I’m excited to escape from the heat and spend time in the beauty of Lake Tahoe,” he said, adding “And it’s great to see my returning customers — health-conscious people who are excited about fresh organic produce.”
Market Manager Christina Abuelo expects a good turnout on opening day. “We have an incredibly loyal and appreciative following up in Tahoe City. They love meeting the farmers’ who are growing their food just ‘down the road.’”
The Tahoe City Certified Farmers’ Market is operated by the Foothill Farmers’ Market Association, a non-profit organization that operates 16 weekly markets in greater Placer County, with each grower certified by their county’s Agricultural Commissioner under the auspices of the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Certified growers plant, pick and sell their own fruits and vegetables.
