As summer fades and autumn hits full swing, local’s know they can count an a few things. School starts, the weather turns, and the 42nd Annual North Tahoe Ski Swap brings bargains galore. This year’s ski swap is being held Saturday, Nov. 11, at the North Tahoe high school/middle school gyms, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

From its humble beginnings as a garage sale of a few skis and boots, the annual event has grown into a veritable winter sports extravaganza. It is now known as one of the larges and best ski swaps in the West. The major fundraiser for students at the North Tahoe Middle School and North Tahoe High School, the swap of today is run by more than 200 volunteers and offers more than 10,000 ski and snowboard-related items.

“Swaps make winter sports affordable when families could easily spend thousands of dollars each year at specialty stores,” DeeDee Driller, event chairwoman said. “Also, it’s a great way for the community to support our local children.” Proceeds from the event will be allocated to various student serving events and needs through the auspices of the parent-volunteer VIPs group.

So, take inventory of your garage and your closet and bring out your old snow gear. Take your items to the North Tahoe Middle School and High School gyms between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10. You may donate your items outright, or set a price. Volunteers will be available to help with pricing. VIPs takes a portion of each sale, and the seller gets the rest. When you drop off items, you will be given tags to price your items and a stub as a receipt. Then, to pick up money for items sold, or to pick up unsold items, go to the North Tahoe Conference Center on Sunday, Nov.12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Present your stub to identify the item and any money due. A check will be issued for sold items (minus VIPs’ portion).

Admission to the ski swap is $1 for adults, 50 cents for children age six to 12 and children under six are free. Visa and Mastercard are accepted. For more information or to volunteer and pre-shop the swap, call 530-581-4001.
