Rock art brochure provides map to famous ancient sites |

In collaboration with Reno-Tahoe, America’s Adventure Place, the Nevada Rock Art Foundation (NRAF) has created the “Engraved in Stone: Nevada Ancient Rock Art” brochure that guides visitors to the region’s most famous rock art sites throughout the Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe regions.
“Standing next to Nevada rock art and knowing that some of these works date back 10,000 years is compelling and inspiring,” said Mary Ann McAuliffe, arts and culture manager of the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA). “Many visitors come to the Silver State specifically to see these ancient sites, but they want to do so in a manner that does not adversely affect site integrity and is respectful of indigenous peoples and of the archaeological remains of the past. This brochure is a step in that direction.”
The 10-page brochure, with its colorful photos and maps, highlights four ancient sites open to the public. Two of the most popular sites are Grimes Point and Hidden Cave located east of Fallon, Nevada off Highway 50. Hickison Summit is further east on Highway 50 and Toquima Cave is located just outside of Austin, Nevada. Another favorite site is Kyburz Flat, which is situated 45 miles west of Reno, heading north on Highway 89 from Truckee, California. The brochure also provides details about people of the past and what they might have been trying to say through their diverse pieces of rock art.
“Since the establishment of the Nevada Rock Art Foundation in 2001, we’ve seen interest in rock art grow significantly,” Alanah Woody, executive director of the NRAF, said. “This brochure is in keeping with our mission because the piece promotes awareness and appreciation of Nevada’s rock art heritage. After visiting sites firsthand, many visitors become key allies in helping us to conserve these unique sites. Some are now part of our stewardship program and monitor sites on a regular basis, while others volunteer their time working in the field and recording this exceptional art.”
More than 5,000 brochures were produced and will be distributed through the promotional efforts of both organizations. Interested parties can call the RSCVA at
1-800-FOR-RENO or the NRAF at 775-323-NRAF to have a brochure mailed to them. Brochures will also be available at a number of Nevada and California state parks, rock art centers and museums as well as the Lassen Volcanic National Park in California.
Woody, along with local community leaders and archeologists, founded the Nevada Rock Art Foundation to preserve, protect and document the more than 1,000 sites in Nevada, as well as educate the public. Despite being situated in spectacular landscapes, many sites are still under threat from building development, vandalism and natural degradation. Instilling a sense of respect and appreciation for the cultural and artistic merit of these ancient engravings and their creators is part of the foundation’s education process.
