F ive years ago we were browsing at the swap meet during Hot August Nights. We didn’t know that there were cars for sale at the swap meet, both indoors and outdoors.
Indoors, we saw two Cobra replicars and really thought of buying one of them, but me being a rather large fellow, couldn’t fit in either. Outside, I left my wife in the shade of the refreshment area enjoying an ice cold lemonade while I browsed the myriad of project cars and parts of cars in the hot sun.
I ran across a strange looking Cobra and kept walking around it until the owner was free to answer some questions. After a short time I found out that it was actually a 1968 Corvette that looked just like a (Ford) Cobra but with many modifications. I sat in the car and fit with lots of room to spare. I quickly found my wife and told her that I thought I had found what I had been looking for for a long time. I coaxed her back into the hot sun to see this beautiful car. After circling the car many times and telling her of all its unique features she exclaimed; “Are you going to drool over this car all day or buy it?”
That did it! I bargained back and forth with the owner and got what I thought was a very good price andbecame the owner of a “One of a Kind” Chevrolet Corvette Cobra!
Car history: The car originally was purchased in Washington by a fellow that didn’t drive it much. He sold it to three guys that tried their hand at racing. During the second event it was in, it caught fire and burnt right to the frame. This started the project to make it what has become today.
The fiberglass body was computer designed to fit the larger wheelbase of the Corvette (98 inches). It took three years to complete and make it fit properly. The trio of owners decided to pay the body designer/builder to destroy the mold so they had a unique “one of a kind” car.
That turned out to be their down fall. It cost them so much that they ran out of money and enthusiasm. They sold it to an entrepreneur who did nothing but buy and sell Corvettes. I bought it from him at the swap meet.
