The 14th Annual Tour de Nez, a celebration of all things cycling taking place in Reno/Tahoe June 22-24, is thrilled to announce a three day series of competitive handcycling events in conjunction with the Tour de Nez pro cycling series. Sanctioned by the U.S. Handcycling Federation, the three-day series finishing with the National Handcycling Criterium Championships, is expected to draw some of the sport’s top competitors to compete for $8,000 in prize money and the title of National Handcycling Criterium Champion.

“We’re so excited about hosting three days of handcycling, topped off with the national championships,” said Tim Healion, Tour de Nez race promoter and Supreme Commander. “This is an awesome opportunity to combine adaptive, as well as non-adaptive sports, in the same venue.

The handcycling series begins with the Verdi Time Trial on June 22nd, in which athletes will compete individually in a 10.6 kilometer timed race. The Verdi Time Trial will be followed by the Truckee Criterium, also taking place on June 22nd, where athletes will compete head-to-head along the 1.0 mile pro course in downtown Truckee, CA. The championships are scheduled to take place in downtown Reno, NV on June 24th and follow the downtown the same route as the famous Tour de Nez Reno Criterium.

The handcyclists will also host a meet and greet on June 24th, giving Tour de Nez fans to chance to find out more about this unique sport and the faces behind it. The meet and greet is hosted by the U.S. Handcycling Federation and VSA Arts of Nevada.

Handcyclists who will be taking part in the Tour de Nez this year include:

Alejandro Albor: Renown as the best handcyclist in the world, Elk Grove resident Albor comes to the Tour de Nez after a decisive win at the recent Rocky Mountain Omnium and is currently the top ranked US Time Trialist.

Monica Bascio: Former World Champion, and a National Champion more than 10 times over, Bascio comes to the Tour de Nez after having recently dominated the challenging Rocky Mountain Omnium.

Patrick Cottini: A former US Road Race champion, Cottini is coming into fine form after having taken a four-year hiatus from competition.

Matt Updike: Former National Time Trial Champion, Updike moved into second place overall in the 2006 American Handcycling Series (AHS) standings (inching in on current leader Todd Richardson) after topping Richardson in every stage of the recent Rocky Mountain Omnium. Coming to Reno after racing in Italy, Updike is poised to take over as leader of the AHS from Richardson at the Tour de Nez.

Todd Richardson: Current American Handcycling Series leader, Richardson will be working hard to defend his ranking against Matt Updike who recently bested him at the Rocky Mountain Omnium.

Also: Steve Hornsey, Cheri Blauwet, Daniel Holloway, Harold Warner, John Kirsch, Rich Wagner and Seth Arseneau.
