If throwing a frisbee around is one of your past times, or, if you enjoy walking around the outdoors or are looking for a new game — it is time to try disc golf. Much like golf, but without the clubs and a disc to take the place of the ball, the object of the game is for participants to traverse a course, usually with 18 holes, and throw a disc into a basket (instead of a hole) in the fewest number of throws possible. Disc golf uses the same terminology and rules as golf.
Disc golf is played in a public park, thus bikers, hikers and children playing are often on the course. Disc golfers have to be very careful to avoid pedestrians, and it is a generally accepted rule that pedestrians have the right-of-way. Be sure to keep an eye on your disc after you throw it, there are many bushes that can easily snake your disc. If you plan to buy a disc, choose one with bright colors.
This game is perfect for an inexpensive day of golf around the Tahoe area.
Basic idea: You start on a Tee Pad, this is where each player throws their drive. You must first locate the basket (there is usually a key next to the pad to show where it is located) and strategically plan your drive to line up your next shot. Obviously for beginners, just throwing the disc and being able to find it in the bushes is good enough. The goal is to be on par or bogey on each hole. As you approach the basket, just like golf, you would putt the disc into the basket and begin the next hole.
There are two locations on the North Shore to play Frisbee golf: Truckee River Disc Golf Course With views of the Truckee River, this course makes a nice afternoon or morning outing. Play Wednesday evenings in the summer and get the bonus of free live music in the Truckee Regional Park amphitheater after your game. This is an 18 hole course and it is free to play and free to park.
Getting there: From I-80, exit on Highway 267 to Lake Tahoe. Turn right at the light on Brockway Rd. The park and course are across from the 7-11. From Truckee, follow Donner Pass Rd. through Downtown Truckee, turn left at the stop sign and cross the railroad tracks and river, following the road up the hill. The park is on the left at the top of the hill.
Lake of the Sky Disc Golf Enjoy Lake Tahoe views and challenging holes on this course in the North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista. This is also an 18 hole course and it is free to play and $3 to park for non-residents.
