Day 2 of the Reno River Festival included the Pro Invitational freestyle whitewater competition and the first ever Run Amuck race that was open to all (especially those in crazy costumes).

Reno’s Truckee River Whitewater Park might just as well be homefield for the Jacksons — Eric Jackson, daughter Emily, 18, and son Dane, 14. Spending just about all of their lives on the road has little effect on where they show up to compete.

Just take the freestyle competition at last weekend’s Fifth Annual Reno River Festival, where each Jackson with a paddle took the top spot in their respective divisions.

We knew the Jacksons were going to perform well, but given the field of competitors, we also knew they would have their hands full against the likes of Steven Wright, or Tanya Faux, Ruth Gordon, or even Reno’s Jayson Craig.

But with so much support coming from their competitors, and the easy-going nature of the world’s best paddlers all in one whitewater park, it seemed predestined the Jacksons would own the freestyle competition in Reno.

Nevertheless, their freestyle domination only added to the spectacle that celebrates an ever-growing sport on the Sierra’s Truckee River.

In the other big event of the day — the first ever Run Amuck race — Run Amuckers came in all shapes and sizes, with wigs, wearing only Man-kinis, hula skirts, as cows, 1970s tennis stars, and more. They leaped over haystacks, did jumping jacks, and bottlenecked at a bounce house.

But there was one thing they all had to do, and that was to get mucky.
