Celebrate the Earth through film
Sit back, kick up your heels and let the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival take you on far-flung global adventures and even on a voyage into the future. Learn about human’s impacts on Mother Earth and how involved communities can make a real difference.
Journey to the year 2056 with the short film “Climate: A Crisis Averted,” and discover a little more about life on an organic farm in “Fridays at the Farm.” Follow two kayakers in seek of epic whitewater as they travel from Alaska to Argentina without a single drop of petroleum in the “Oil and Water Project,” by Seth Warren.
The 3rd Annual Patagonia Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival kicks off the North Lake Tahoe Truckee Earth Day celebration at the Olympic Village Inn in Squaw Valley on Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m.
A selection of ten short ‘Best of Fest’ films was chosen from a multitude of films originally screened at the annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival held in January in Nevada City, Calif.
There will be a no-host bar and tasty eats provided by the Crest Cafe available for purchase at the film festival.
The major sponsor of the 2008 festival is Nevada County Recycles. There are also three local sponsors: Lake Tahoe Central Adventures, Gemme Group at Tahoe Riverfront Realty and Andrew Koijane of O'Dette Mortgage Group (OMG). Show starts at 7 p.m. at the Olympic Village Inn, in Squaw Valley on Friday, April 25.
What is the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival anyway? The initial festival originates from the South Yuba River Citizen's League (SYRCL, pronounced 'circle') and was created after successful lobbying to achieve "Wild and Scenic" status for the Yuba River. The home festival features more than 125 films and 4,500 attendees.
In 2004, due to several requests from outside communities, SYRCL decided to take the festival on tour to spread the word about environmental issues and join communities together to encourage activists to take action.
Why check out the Fest? Film Festival Coordinator Darren Campbell urges all interested in nature and the environment to attend the festival.
“This is something that is fairly new to Tahoe that many people would really enjoy. It’s a great way to learn about today’s most pressing environmental issues, and the next day, at the Earth Day Festival, everyone will have a chance to meet the folks working on environmental issues in our area, and listen to some great music at the same time.
“What else are you going to do this Friday night?” asks Campbell. “Come out to the film festival at Squaw Valley and learn about environmental issues that become more important every day. Educate yourself about how you can make a difference and meet other people that share similar interests and values.”
Where can I find tickets? Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets are on sale now at New Moon Natural Foods in Tahoe City and Truckee, Mad about Music in Kings Beach and Alice's Market in Squaw.
