Tahoe Comedy North brings the funny, oddly enough on April Fool’s Day (April 1), at the Crystal Bay Casino’s Crown Room. Headliner Dennis Gaxiola returns, with new-to-Tahoe comic Tina Dupuy featuring. Adam Stone returns as host, and Frank Eways appears as the guest spot. Tickets are $10 advance, $15 day of. Show starts at 8 p.m. Call (775) 833-6333 for tickets.
Tahoe World online editor Paul Raymore caught up with comedian Dennis Gaxiola, the last time he performed at Crystal Bay, for a Q&A. See what he had to say about himself.
Dennis Gaxiola is one of the hottest comics in the country, with appearances on Comedy Central with Jamie Foxx and appearing nationwide on the Latin Kings of Comedy tour. A finalist of the 2007 SF international Comedy Competition, Dennis’ comedy is for all audiences…
TW: Have you played the Tahoe area before? DG: Yes, I’ve headlined the Silver Legacy, The Reno Hilton, The Sands, Crystal Bay and I opened for Paul Rodriguez at Harrahs in South Shore…
TW: Your Web site says you’re the son of a preacher. What does your father think of your chosen profession as a comic? DG: My Dad was pretty open minded and he got a kick out of me making people laugh … I pride myself in being able to work for all audiences including churches. My act in a casino is a little different than what I would do in a church, but then again, there is a lot of praying in casinos.
TW: How do you come up with your material? DG: Life! Living it, observing it and laughing at it. If you don’t take it too serious you can have a pretty good time …
TW: Your Web site also makes it sound like you have one of the most diverse families ever (“With a melting pot of a family, that includes his Mexican heritage, an African American Brother in-law, a Jewish Brother in-law, a Puerto Rican sister in-law and a Philippino wife, Dennis’ quick wit is loaded for any audience.”). In your experience, does humor cross cultural and ethnic boundaries? DG: Yes, so long as the material is not mean spirited. There is humor in how we can be so different — yet the same.
TW: How did growing up in Berkeley, California influence your humor? DG: Growing up in Berkeley afforded me the opportunity to experience diversity at a young age (before the melting pot of in-laws). Plus the free speech movement had to rub off on me, empowering a smart-aleck with an opinion.
Tina Dupuy's Bio: The daughter of hippie missionaries, Tina Dupuy is not your typical comedian. Don’t let the blond hair fool you. /"The standards are a lot lower when you’re a blond. All you have to do is remember that the ‘b’ in ‘dumb’ is silent. — Then people are like, ‘Woah — she’s smart!’” Tina has a distinctive way of combining today’s topics with her own life. A shrewd observer, she is a unique voice. Some may find it dark, surprising or just down right silly. But there is no denying — it’s funny!
As a comedian Tina has toured the country. An award winning writer, her column has been published in the LA Times, Newsday and Huffington Post. She is a regular freelancer for the highly acclaimed LA Weekly. Her quick wit is a regular feature on AM, FM and XM. Plus she was the head writer for an original comedy program on KPFK, Pacifica. You may recognize her from Last Comic Standing, Channel 35 or the festival sweeping short “The Arc”.
