Lakeside Gallery SnowFest! Retrospective and community art classes
Feb. 29 through March 9
Lakeside Gallery (8636 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach)
(530) 546-3135
Back in 1996 Lakeside Gallery had a big event during SnowFest! that drew hundreds of people in to visit and chat with owners and founders Lola and John Owen. Now that John and Lola have retired, new owners Tamara and Meera decided to get seriously involved with this year’s SnowFest! and they went back to the idea of doing a retrospective. After dozens of phone calls and many hours of sifting and sorting they were able to come up with a nice eclectic collection of photos, newspaper articles, posters and memorabilia graciously lent to the gallery by many locals.

Since Lakeside Gallery has been in Kings Beach at 8636 N. Lake Blvd for more than 30 years specializing in local original art and artists, and SnowFest! will be 27 this year, it just seemed appropriate to celebrate that kind of longevity in an era of the all-too-disposable and fleeting.

In addition to the retrospective, Lakeside Gallery is having several other events during SnowFest! Everyday from Monday, March 3 through Friday, March 7, there will be a different, special art class.

Monday, there will be a watercolor class taught by Heidi Reeves. Heidi is a local artist whose watercolors can be seen around town in a variety of places including at the gallery.

Tuesday, Debra von Zink will teach a class in portrait painting called “Paint the Mona Lisa.” Deborah has painted several paintings that were turned into SnowFest! posters over the years and the gallery even has an original of one in the retrospective.

Wednesday, Terry Tangney, who also graces the walls at the gallery, will have a class in oil painting called “Aspens.”

Thursday, the founder and original owner of the gallery, Lola Owen will return to teach “Snowy Sand Harbor,” an oil painting class.

On Friday, gallery owner Meera will teach a class “Create a lasting memory of Tahoe” in acrylics.

The classes are designed to be all inclusive, students will not need to bring any supplies of their own and will be able to leave with a completed painting. It is necessary to sign up in advance at (530) 546-3135 for all classes.

Also on Friday night March 7, the Gallery will remain open until 7 p.m. with coffee and hot chocolate in order to be part of the Kings Beach Friday night festivities. Then on Saturday there will be a Gallery Reception after the Kings Beach parade at 12:30 p.m. Come in and meet some of the artists, view the retrospective display.

Snow Masterpiece
By Morgan Kriz
What will begin with a 30 foot high pile of snow on the Beachfront Recreation Area in Kings Beach, will be crafted into a vision local guys Jeremiah Johnson and his brother Nakia, have planted in their head and in dozens of sketches.

The Johnson brothers grew up on Sugarpine State Park, their father was the forest ranger, building snow caves, igloos and whatever else they could concoct out of snow. What started off as a fun hobby for the two has continued throughout their life, Jeremiah is now 30, Nakia is 27. If you look hard enough around the North Shore you will find little project Jeremiah, Nakia and friends have sculpted.

While many of their masterpieces they build are interactive with slides, caves, basically a big playground, the piece they plan to build for their first ever SnowFest! Snow Sculpture is a dragon seizing a castle. The actual idea is to build a Shenlong elemental water dragon, guardians of lakes, surrounding a castle that will be roughly 30 feet tall, he said.

Tuesday began the construction by plowing (a guestimation) of more than 10,000 yards of snow into a pile on the beach. The entire sculpture is planned to have a 40 by 60 foot base sculpture on the beach by Friday, March 7. Building days will be March 3 and 4, Johnson said the days will be long and full of sculpting, the public is welcome to come out and watch. The event is made for all ages and is very kid friendly.

The issues that they could run into is dry snow. Earlier this season, it was so cold they had to add water to make the snow easier to sculpt with. If there is too much snow or rain, tarps will be used to cover the piece. The weather is calling for good conditions on the building days, so things should go according to plan.

Jeremiah is inspired by many things when he builds. The thought of working at the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden motivates him to continue to go bigger and better each time. He said it is the highest level of ice sculpting there is to work there (check out icehotel.com) but for Jeremiah, he said that he loves to build with snow no matter where he is, and knows that their is always something to build that is bigger and greater.

All in all, Jeremiah’s enthusiasm and passion for building ice sculptures is contagious. This SnowFest! event is one of a kind and a definite must see. Head to the Beachfront Recreation Area on March 3-4 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and March 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to see all the snow turn into a true Tahoe masterpiece. Come to the beach on Friday, March 7 for the unveiling of the entire sculpture when it is lit up and complete. Johnson hopes to continue the tradition in years to come with bigger and better sculptures!

River Ranch Snow Sculpture Contest
Sunday, March 9 from noon to 5 p.m.
River Ranch Lodge (Hwy 89 at Alpine Meadows Road)
(530) 583-4264
Local teams will be creating the most inventive snow sculptures at River Ranch’s 20th Annual Snow Sculpture event on Sunday, March 9.
The Snow Sculpture contest has been the closing party and grand finale for the North Tahoe Snow Festival for the last 27 years and has been a great success with many spectators showing up to support the teams as they construct creative snow sculptures.

Last year’s winner, Gar Woods took first place with their vision of Tahoe Tessie, and Trilogy Spa came in second with their “Happy 26th Birthday Snow Fest” cake complete with home made cupcakes.

The event kicks-off at noon on Sunday, March 9 on the patio and judging occurs at 3 p.m. with prizes awarded for the most creative sculptures. Spectators will enjoy live music, cold beer and delicious barbecued hamburgers, veggie burgers, chicken sandwiches, spicy hot links and hot dogs for the kids while enjoying and afternoon outdoors by the river!

Ski gear, bottles of wine, ski lift tickets and ski lessons dinner at local restaurants, are just a few of the items that will be raffled off at 4 p.m. All proceeds from the raffle go to Disabled Sports USA-Far West where $1,500 was raised last year alone!
