Tamara and Meera at Lakeside Gallery love Snow Fest. So much in fact that they went on a treasure hunt to find history and memorabilia from past winter carnivals. The idea for a retrospective came several years ago when Meera tried to organize items for another venture. At that time she discovered that most of the amazing history and artifacts of Snow Fest past had been lost or damaged and not much remained intact.
Back in 1996 Lakeside Gallery had a big event during Snow Fest that drew hundreds of people in to visit and chat with owners and founders Lola and John Owen. Now that John and Lola have retired Tamara and Meera decided to get seriously involved with this year’s Snow Fest and they went back to the idea of doing a retrospective. After dozens of phone calls and many hours of sifting and sorting they were able to come up with a nice eclectic collection.
The retrospective will highlight photos, newspaper articles, posters, and memorabilia graciously lent to the gallery by such local greats as Judy Friedman, Ruth Schnabel, the Gatekeepers Museum, Deborah von Zink, Tayna Canino, Lola Owen, Project Mana and others. The gallery show will include original art work by Heidi Reeves, Deborah von Zink, Caren Bechtold, Caroline Cutler, Bela Bodo, Linda O'Toole, Lola Owen and Tamara Blanco. As well as Cathy McClelland, Van Marshall and Terry Tangney.
Since Lakeside Gallery has been in Kings Beach at 8636 N. Lake Blvd for over 30 years specializing in local, original art and artists and Snow Fest will be 27 this year it just seemed appropriate to celebrate that kind of longevity in an era of the all too disposable and fleeting. Tamara and Meera decided to go all out this year Snow Fest, the community and the arts.
In addition to the retrospective, Lakeside Gallery is having several other events during Snow Fest. Everyday from Monday, March 3 through Friday, March 7, there will be a different, special art class.
Monday there will be a watercolor class taught by Heidi Reeves. Heidi is a local artist whose watercolors can be seen around town in a variety of places including at the gallery.
On Tuesday Debra von Zink will teach a class in portrait painting called “Paint the Mona Lisa.” Deborah has painted several paintings that were turned into Snow Fest posters over the years and the gallery even has an original of one in the retrospective.
On Wednesday Terry Tangney, who also graces the walls at the gallery, will have a class in oil painting called “Aspens.”
Thursday the founder and original owner of the gallery, Lola Owen will return to teach “Snowy Sand Harbor” an oil painting class .
Friday, March 7, Meera will teach a class “Create a lasting memory of Tahoe” in acrylics. The classes are designed to be all inclusive, students will not need to bring any supplies of their own and will be able to leave with a completed painting. It is necessary to sign up in advance at (530) 546-3135
Also on Friday night March 7, the Gallery will remain open until 7 p.m. with coffee and hot chocolate in order to be part of the Kings Beach Friday night festivities. Then on Saturday there will be a Gallery Reception after the Kings Beach parade at 12:30 p.m. Come in and meet some of the artists, view the retrospective one last time before it gets packed away and stay for coffee and light snacks.
You might be surprised how many fabulous and famous local artists got their start at Lakeside Gallery. They have a great variety of classes available, a full summer schedule, all the art supplies you might ever need and an excellent custom framer. Stop by during Snow Fest, take a class, view the shows and get to know your neighbors.
Snow Fest will be from Feb 29 through March 9th Beginning with the torchlight parade, fireworks and laser light show at Squaw Valley on Friday night and carries on throughout the week. Lakeside Gallery is proud to be a supporter of Snow Fest and want you to join them, support your community, beat cabin fever, get out and have fun!
