Imagine racing down a steep, tight, winding course filled with jumps, rollers, berms and tabletops at Squaw Valley Ski Resort. Now imagine there are three other skiers charging with you in a mass start, elbow-to-elbow battle, and the object is to cross the finish line first. Such is the life of skiercross athlete Anik Demers Wild.

Internationally-ranked skiercross champion Anik Demers Wild is a must see as she races in the women’s skiercross over the weekend. A native of Lac Beauport, Canada and a resident of Truckee, Calif., this go-fast-girl has the need for speed and will be racing down the mountain for a title and for keys to a new Jeep.

Anik took the time to answer some questions the Tahoe World fired at her last week, in between competing in the X Games in Aspen and the World Cup in Park City.

Tahoe World: Where did you grow up skiing? What made you come to Lake Tahoe?

Anik Demers Wild: I grew up skiing in Lac Beauport near Quebec City in Canada. I skied for the Canadian Alpine team and I retired from the Canadian ski team with a scholarship at Sierra Nevada College, in Incline Village. Since Graduation in 1999, I have been skiing skiercross and adopting Tahoe as my winter home.
I have been in Truckee full time since 2003; I am now a Truckee home owner and a small business owner in the Village at Northstar, the “Apex Bungy.” The company is called Tahoe Apex Adventure.

TW: When was your first skiing experience? (Do you remember?)

ADW: At age 3 in my parents back yard. I don't remember but I have a pretty funny picture of it.

TW: Where do you train most of the season? Do you train all year round? How do you stay motivated?

ADW: I trained in the Tahoe Area mostly, I ski with the Sugar Bowl ski team when I’m home. I’m a member of the Canadian Ski-Cross Team, therefore, I do need to go back to my homeland once in a while. I train year around; we have training camp in the off season and I spend a lot of the summer time on Donner Lake paddling outrigger Canoe.

The passion for what I do, I love to ski; that's enough to keep me motivated.

TW: What is your favorite mountain in Tahoe? What is your favorite run/line?

ADW: Sugar Bowl, and I enjoy the technical terrain at Squaw. I don't have favorite runs/line, where ever the snow is good.

TW: Do you like competing on your home turf?

ADW: For sure I do, I love the home field advantage.

TW: What are you looking forward to most at the Jeep Tour at Squaw Valley?

ADW: I really want to win!

TW: How is your local business Tahoe Apex Adventure going? What gave you the idea to start the business?

ADW: It’s doing great, the Village at Northstar is growing, so are we. It’s so nice up there. It’s a great environment to work in, a great family resort and Jay an I love what we do. About getting starting with Tahoe Apex Adventure; being at the right place at the right time.

TW: What motivates you to continue to ski and race?

ADW: I’m a competitor in every aspect. I really enjoy the ski-cross format. I want to master my sport and I want to be the best in the World.

TW: What goes through your head while you race?

ADW: Most of the time, too much stuff is going on in my head; ideally, I like to be in the moment.

TW: Do you listen to music while you ski? If so, what type of music do you listen to?

ADW: I listen to music, sometimes.

TW: Are you planning on going to any of the Jeep Tour music shows over the weekend?

ADW: Yes, for sure ... after my race. The 48straight weekends are so much fun!

TW: What do you like to do while you are not skiing?

ADW: When I’m on the road, I like to find time to relax. When I’m home, I work quite a bit and I like to spend time with my husband and the dogs.

TW: What do you like most about what you do?

ADW: The challenge of being the fastest on the hill. I enjoy the training involved in looking to reaching my goals. At 36, it is a great reason to keep in shape. But again, my passion for spending time on snow.

TW: Is there anything else you would like to add?

ADW: We have a great crew of Truckee/Tahoe local competing this weekend. I hope to get a good crowd to cheer-on.
