The Space Located in the middle of Tahoe City on the lake side of North Lake Boulevard, Syd’s Bagelry is a modern mountain-style cafe. The newly-renovated space is light and cozy with knotty pine paneling, marble counter tops, plenty of space to sit and impressive prints created by local artists on the walls.
Co-owner Dean Parra said his design ideas, which cost him $50,000 in a remodel last spring, come from the aesthetic he grew up with in California’s East-Bay area.
The Food Bagels, sandwiches, soups and salads, house-baked goods and more are all on the menu. Parra and Andrea, his wife and business partner, strive to use only the freshest and most natural ingredients in all of their menu items. The meats are all organic and “many of our products are what you will see in the health food stores,” he said.
The emphasis on healthy and tasty food is more expensive, he said, but they have been able to keep customer prices down.
Parra said his newest winter passion is fresh organic soups, which he tries to make on a daily basis.
“Only a pure heart can make a true soup,” is the motto the bagel-shop owner strives for.
The Drinks Expect to find beer on tap, fresh fruit smoothies and of course, locally roasted coffee. With 10 coffee shops along the short commercial strip, Parra said he prides himself on offering his clients a well-made coffee drink served in a porcelain cup. He is not against to-go cups, but feels his customers “want something quick with a place to sit.”
Gotta Try During your next visit try the Very Berry smoothie with a staff recommended injection of soy milk blended, with strawberry, blueberry, banana and orange juice. Or, if you’re tired of Syd’s award winning coffee (roasted in South Lake Tahoe), try the Milky Way — a giant mocha with caramel.
Although the cafe is famous for their bagel sandwiches and giant breakfast burritos, a staff favorite is the hot Turkey Pastrami Reuben on rye with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. Another standout is the Pilgrim, a turkey and jack cheese affair with a Thanksgiving twist of cranberry sauce on top.
Tidbit Bring the laptop, the cafe offers free wi-fi Internet access. In fact a running inside joke among locals is that Syd’s is Tahoe City’s unofficial office, “I run my non-profit from Syd’s,” laughed regular Cheri Sugal, the director of Rainforest2reef. Daily soup specials are sure to warm you up on a cold winter day. Stay tuned this summer, the Parras’ and their staff will open for dinner for the second summer in a row, and round out their beverage service with red and white wines.
Price Range $1 to $7.25 for baked goods, coffee drinks, assorted sandwiches and more. The drinks are reasonably priced, ranging from $1 for a basic coffee to $3.50 for speciality drinks and beer.
