The 13th annual Winter Trails Day, will take place nationwide this Saturday, Jan. 12. The purpose of the day offers children and adults, new to snow sports, the chance to try snowshoeing and cross country skiing for free at resorts around the Tahoe area.

Tahoe Cross County Ski Area has been involved in the Winter Trails Day program for more than nine years. Ski area manager Kevin Murnane agrees that Winter Trails Day “gives people, who may not otherwise try cross country skiing, the opportunity to get out there and who may hopefully even become a cross country skier. It is a healthy experience and an anaerobic exercise. You can go at your own pace and it is a sport the whole family can enjoy. People think it is a whole lot of work, but it’s easier than it looks.”

With complimentary lessons, rentals and a trail pass — cross country areas around the area are looking forward to the event. Weather conditions haven’t been very cooperative in the past, but the forecast calls for peak conditions this weekend. Make sure to call ahead to the resorts to reserve a spot:

Description

TRTA Winter Trails Day will kick off at 10 am, will meet on the west end of Tahoe Meadows, on the right hand side. Look for a Tahoe Rim Trail Sign in the Meadow, we will be located by the sign and doing sign ins. Once everyone is signed in and is geared up in snowshoes and winter gear, we will do an introduction of the day, a brief Leave no Trace Talk and introduce the organizations, volunteers, guides, and participants. Also we will be splitting into groups and participants will be paired with guides for the day.

Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol will kickoff the event with a winter safety talk and demo. After that we will start the snowshoe trek,   the hike will be approx 3 miles or more out to a beautiful lake vista, where we will stop for lunch/snacks, and where the USFS will do an interpretive talk.

Afterwards we will hike back to the meeting place. This will be a fun, and informative day on winter recreation and snowshoeing. The day should conclude around 2 p.m.
