Our gift guide concludes this week with gift ideas that have a Tahoe theme to them. They make great last-minute ideas to share something special from a special place. All of these gift ideas can be found in local shops around the North Shore.

Tahoe Themed Presents

Gifts on a liftee’s salary ($20 and under):

• Stocking Stuffers: If you haven’t walked into a local souvenir shop lately step right up to your one stop holiday shop. Tahoe shot glasses, fridge magnets, calendars, coffee mugs, playing cards and clothing abound in gift shops all around the lake. These item range from $5 to $30. Don’t forget local candy and sweet shops such as Tahoe City Chocolate, upstairs in the Boatworks Mall, providing the atmosphere of an old-fashioned mountain confectionary with giant lollipops and licorice wheels as well as wonderful chocolate treats.

• Jewelry by Jeni: Find local jewelry maker Jeni Lammerding’s custom-made abalone shell creations at the Dam Café. Great jewelry and photography by other local artists such as Sue Opermeirer and Ken Volz is offered as well, as are many other Christmas knick-knacks. From $10.

• Waxen Moon Pine Scented Candle: The smell of these candles evokes the thought of walking through D.L. Bliss on a crisp fall day. Turn giving a present into a day of fun at the Waxen Moon candle studio in Squaw Valley. You can choose the wax, shape and scent of your candle for a truly personalized gift. • “Squallywood” by Robb Gaffney: Squallywood and other titles by local authors make great Tahoe-themed holiday gifts. For a great kids book try “The Story of Tahoe Tessie” by local author Bob McCormick. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy wildflower guides such as “Tahoe Wildflowers” by Lard Blackwell, local adventure guides like “The Tahoe Rim Trail” by Tim Hauserman or “Kayaking Tahoe” by Don Sullivan. If you are buying a gift for a fan of mystery novel check out the Tahoe-based mystery series by Todd Borg. Books are $7 to $20.

• The Godfather II: What could get more Tahoe-themed than the view of the lake in Francis Ford Coppola’s second installment to his trilogy? Movies featuring Lake Tahoe as a setting make great gifts for locals and far away friends alike. Another pick? The more recent Smoking Aces set in South Lake. Of course, we couldn’t forget the granddaddy of all Tahoe ski movies “Hot Dog … The Movie.” The Chinese Downhill will decide everything. Look for other ski movie titles when you’re shopping last minute this weekend.

Gifts on a ski patroller’s salary ($20 to $100):

• Cookie Pass: Go to Wildflour in the Olympic House and purchase a cookie pass at a value of your choice ranging from $75-$750. The pass will get the recipient prepaid cookies and treats from all Wildflour locations. You can personalize the pass with stickers right at the counter before presenting it to your loved one. Every time they bite down on a chocolate chip cookie or sip a hot chocolate during a cold wait for the Cable Car they will think of you.

• Local Concert Tickets: Check out Joby’s in Truckee or Mad about Music in Kings Beach for seasonal concerts all around the lake. Right now tickets are on sale for the big New Years Eve celebrations in South Lake as well as holiday concerts in Squaw Valley. Tickets are around $25.

• Chamois Pitcher Pass: Give a gift that people are sure to toast to all winter long — the brand new pitcher pass offered at Le Chamois in Squaw Valley. • Bears: What could scream Tahoe louder than a pewter, wooden, ceramic or wax bear? Find them in every imaginable setting-as lantern holders, key chains, coat racks, lawn decorations, table embellishments and more.

Gifts on a mogul’s salary ($100 and over):

• Tahoe Opal Pendant: These beautiful opal pendants come in the shape of the lake, outlined in sterling silver, white gold or yellow gold. $105 and up. Check out earrings to match!

• Ski Pass: If you can afford it, this is the best gift of the season. Take your pick of any local mountain and give the gift that keeps on giving, hopefully all the way until June. You will earn undying love and affection. From around $500, see prices online.


• Tahoe Inspired Art Work: James Harold Gallery in the Boatworks Mall features local artists, as does Riverside Studio in Truckee and many other galleries, restaurants and coffee shops in the area. Get a vintage Tahoe print, a picture of the view by the lake or even a locally crafted hand-blown Christmas tree ornament. From $80 to $800.


• Mountain Home Furnishings: This Tahoe City store will custom make anything from a couch to a pool table for your Tahoe home. They offer window coverings, tables, beds, wall hangings and anything else you may need to furnish your home. Come into their show room for a look around or if you’re not sure what you need have one of their designers come to your house for a consultation. • Time for Wine: While this Tahoe City wine store has something to suit every price range, their high-end selection makes for a particularly impressive gift. Try the Pahlmeyer from Napa at $128 a bottle or for a spectacular dessert wine try the half bottle of Chateau d’Yquem for $225. They also offer a wine club membership ranging in price from $59-$700 depending on length of membership.

• Ski trip to Portillo, Chile: Portillo has been South America’s #1 ski resort, famous for its majestic setting and deep snow. Once you go, you’ll never want to leave. This is the North American Ski Training Center ’s 14th season at this friendly, exclusive, and challenging resort. Ski down to glacier-blue Lake Inca or traverse into huge bowls amidst 15,000’ Andean peaks.
