On August 15, 2007, the southern coastal region of Peru was devastated by a two-minute duration, 8.0 earthquake. This quake resulted in the destruction of local homes, businesses, schools and the livelihoods of the residents. The final results of this natural disaster left more than 80,000 people displaced and in desperate need of assistance.
Local organization Burners Without Borders (BWB) is partnering with reknown organization, Hands On Disaster Response, to assist in rebuilding the communities affected by this disaster. Burners without Borders is an offspring of the Burning Man Festival, that coalesced from a spontaneous collective instinct to meet gaping needs where existing societal systems were clearly failing. Burners without Borders will be stepping into the shoes of Hands On after Jan. 20 (Hands On is a response, not a reconstructive organization) and will provide the much needed reconstruction of manpower and supplies.
The Peruvian Earthquake Disaster Response Program, a sub-program of BWB, will be led by a veteran construction and disaster relief responder and Tahoe resident, Sam Bloch. In addition to Sam, multiple Tahoe residents have pledged their support for this program with the donation of both time and money. Currently, Sam’s crew will consist of at least four Tahoe residents and more than 20 Burners — with the anticipation of many more. This small group will be joined by a large number of other like minded volunteers from all over the world.
Current fundraising has provided the initial startup money needed. Burners without Borders is proud to have gained support not only from Burning Man and the Burning Man community, but from the Lake Tahoe community. Future fundraising efforts are focused on providing the tools and materials needed to rebuild this devastated area. With the manpower already committed to this program, Burners without Borders anticipates extremely positive results for the southern coastal region of Peru, its citizens and volunteers.
On Sunday, Dec. 9 Burners without Boarders presents a fundraising event at Bar of America in Truckee with live music, dancing and dinner. A $25 donation will go directly to support the work the Peruvian Earthquake Disaster Response Program is doing in Peru (see page 15).
For more information or to make a donation. visit www.burnerswithoutborders.org, or call Jimmy Levi at (530) 386-0503 or Sam Bullock at (775) 303-7290.

About the Peruvian Earthquake Disaster Response Program: Tahoe resident Sam Bloch arrived in Pisco, Peru on Nov. 14. Following his arrival, he wasted no time setting the foundation for Burners without Borders to build a strong program.
Within the first week, a headquarters was acquired; providing ample room for volunteers to live while donating their manpower. Currently, project work is focused on the rebuilding of community networks, specifically the school and residences. Lack of water and proper sanitation is becoming a major issue as Peru’s summer heat continues. Working with the Peruvian Ministry of Housing and the FURSUR (Peru’s equivalence of FEMA), designs are being drafted to build permanent walls to encompass the plumbing needs for temporary houses.
This design will supersede the current non-plumbing design of the temporary houses. The completion of this crucial work is contingent on the continuation fiscal support for this program.
A note from Jimmy Levi: Burners without Borders’ presents its Peru Earthquake Disaster Response Program. Members of Burners without Burners feel the Tahoe Basin is a wonderful place to live due in large part to the people that make up our communities. Within this community there is a strong network of like minded people that can come together to provide assistance to those in need.
Local members of Burners without Borders have been dedicating their efforts both as on the ground volunteers in Peru and through fundraisers. Through working with local businesses and organizations such as the Truckee Rotary Club, Bar of America, Environ-Rents, La Fondue and many local philanthropists BWB are successfully raising money to fulfill our mission. BWB members hope that you share its views and are willing to assist the people affected by this horrendous natural disaster.
