Alpenglow Sports, along with local climber Dave Nettle, have organized a speaker series that will run throughout the winter season. The programs will spotlight World-Class athletes and their latest adventures and each show will be a benefit for local and global charities.

Alpenglow owner Don Fyfe is making a goal to provide a quality community event combined with a focus on community service and charity, he explained. The series will give the community an opportunity to get together with friends, be inspired and give back.

Alpenglow Sports will kick off its premier season at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15. The series will be hosted by The Sawtooth Ridge Café, in the heart of Tahoe City. The event will continue with one show each month through winter, with the finale during Snowfest.

There is no charge for the shows and everyone is welcome. There will been an optional raffle for great prizes with all proceeds going to the charities. The Sawtooth Ridge Café will be open for drinks and a bite to eat before and during the shows. People are encouraged to arrive early for good seating.

“We are really excited to support this event,” said Fyfe, owner of Alpenglow Sports. “It is a great way for me to show my appreciation to everyone who has helped Alpenglow Sports grow in this community, I know that the shows will inspire us all to go out and plan our own adventures.”

The series will cover a variety of topics including alpinism, mountaineering and backcountry skiing, as well as the adventure of travel to remote and far off places.
“I’m super psyched to be a part of the film series,” said Dave Nettle, local mountaineer, skier and slideshow presenter, “It’s an event that everyone can enjoy, from Tahoe’s most active adventurers to arm chair enthusiasts of all ages.”

Skier and filmmaker Nils Larsen will inaugurate the series by presenting his film, “Skiing in the Shawdow of Genghis Khan,” about skiing in the Altia Mountains of China.

All funds raised during that evening will benefit Project MANA. The organization will be on hand for any questions and information regarding their organization. After the show there will be a raffle with all proceeds benefitting Project MANA.

Nov 15 show: Nils Larsen — "Skiing in the Shadow of Genghis Khan"

Join veteran free heel skier Nils Larsen for a fascinating film presentation about skiing in the Altai Mountains of China. His film explores skiing in this remote range where China, Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia intersect as well as the traditions and day to day life of the hardy local people that still use skiing as a tool for survival. The film is the result of his several trips into this amazing part of the world where the roots of skiing link ice age winter travel with the powder turns of today.

Nils was born in a warm climate and never recovered from that trauma. Winter therapy started in the 1970s and in earnest in 1979, when he moved to the Canadian border in northeast Washington. Nils teaches freeheel and backcountry skiing skills, and has produced 3 videos on the subject. He also works as a consultant for Karhu Skis, where he has the enviable title of 'Minister of Ski Culture.’ The last 3 years he has been researching the roots of skiing and indigenous ski cultures in Central Asia. In his spare time he likes to go skiing.

Subsequent shows will include:
Andrew McLean, Dec. 20, fundraising for Sierra Avalanche Center
Mike Libecki Jan. 24, fundraising for Access Fund
Jimmy Chin Feb. 21, fundraising for Tahoe Women Services
Dave Nettle March 6, fundrainsing for Adventure-Risk-Challenge
