I first learned about micro brewed beer during my college days at Humboldt State University when someone put a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in my hand.
Until then I'd been drinking swill. Born and raised in the Central Valley, micro breweries weren't as popular or in existence before I transferred to college behind the Redwood Curtain.
After that first Sierra Nevada, I learned about Humboldt Red Nectar and Humboldt Gold Nectar. Humboldt Red goes great with the Humboldt Brewery's Cajun burger, by the way. And the only way to get that combo is to visit the brewery in Arcata, Calif., It's seven hours away, but well worth the trip.
Also in college, another friend introduced me to Seattle's Red Hook Pale Ale.
One trip into the Safeway, and the beer aisle became a portal to micro breweries across the Northwest.
There was something about the rugged Redwood jungles of the North Coast and micro-brewed beer that went so well together.
Holiday breaks became almost depressing because it took the Central Valley a long time to catch up to the microbrew revolution. No Humboldt brews in stores, but one could at least find a Sierra Nevada.
Shortly after moving to Tahoe, Robbie Curtis and crew opened the Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. pub house in Crystal Bay.
Finally another town with its own brew pub. Good, hand crafted beer was just minutes away.
Now, when I travel I make sure the route passes through a town with an honest brew pub.
In Portland, the choices are almost overwhelming. McMenamins anyone?
In San Francisco, there's nothing better than catching up with college friends over a couple pints and a plate of garlic fries at Gordon Biersch along the Embarcadero.
Stop for a Red Tail Ale in Hopland, Calif., on your coastal adventure.
In Southern Oregon, you have to find the Rogue River Brewery. Along the Cascades' east slope, no trip is complete without stopping for a burger (half price on Mondays) and a pint at the Deschutes Brewing Co. in Bend, Ore.
But now, as we're get into the holiday season and prep for a hopeful winter, traveling to breweries both near and far may not fit one's budget.
Fortunately for us we have Foam Fest — that annual celebration of what the Tahoe Adaptive Ski School does to get people on the slopes and enjoying the outdoors.
At Foam Fest, we can celebrate athletes who've overcome adverse challenges with great beer and music.
At Foam Fest, we can take a brewery tour of the California and the Northwest in a couple hours. For a $25 ticket, the flavorful world of micro brew is at your fingertips.
