Buckhorn Espresso & Grill offers room, and classic cuisine with mountain view
If some of the faces look familiar at Truckee’s Buckhorn Espresso & Grill, it’s because you’ve seen Randy and Janece Nelson in Kings Beach, where they owned and operated the Brickhouse Espresso and Grill.
Opting to try something a little closer to home, they sold the Brickhouse and opened Buckhorn at the roundabout on Brockway Road. Open since July, the Buckhorn is gaining customer recognition by pulling people into their restaurant that’s away from the major commercial cores of Truckee and North Tahoe.
The Space Next door to the Fifty Fifty Brewery, once your walk through the door you’ll be enthralled with the 23-foot by 9 foot mural painted by Jim Mathias. With more than double the space they had in Kings Beach, Mathias’ mural — depicting a mule deer buck in a classic mountain scene — dominates the restaurant. Tired of watching cars navigate the roundabout, get lost in the mural.
The Food Classic American fare, while featuring a diverse menu with such offerings as soups and tasty salads (which are meals in themselves), nine burger choices ranging from the Buckhorn Angus, to a vegan-friendly Gardenburger, as well as chicken and turkey options. You might be as surprised as we were to find paninis on the menu, but the Buckhorn gives you a choice of a turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese and avocado panini, or a Garden Veggie Panini with mushrooms, onions, peppers, salad mix and gorgonzola cheese.
Kids aren’t left out of the menu choices with offerings for Little Buck-a-roos, such as grilled cheese sandwich sticks, Dog Gone Good Hot Dog, to Boo Boo’s breakfast burrito, or Chocolate Chippy Cakes.
A full breakfast menu rounds out your dining choices here with several omelette choices, full pancake stacks, Swedish Crêpes, to egg combos with either bacon or sausage, or both to complement your order. Someone has to try the Best Ever Egg Sandwich with four strips of bacon, cheese, two eggs wrapped in two grilled bread slices. We chickened out.
The Drinks The diner classics are there with soft drinks, juices, coffee tea, as well as lattés and a white mocha. However, Buckhorn offers a stunning array of smoothie choices with a whopping 32-ounce size for less than $6.
Gotta Try The Buckhorn Panini is a crowd fave, and gets a recommendation from Janece.
Price Range Very affordable with breakfast sides ranging from $1.49-$3.99, to $8.99 salads, with the burger choices averaging $9.99, the Little Buck-a-roos tops out at $5.99, with a breakfast menu that starts at $4.99 and tops out at $9.99.
