Elizabeth Archer, co-director/choreographer for Trails and Vistas, spoke to Paul Raymore of the Tahoe World on Monday about the upcoming Trails and Vistas — Passages art walk on Donner Summit.

Below are excerpts from that conversation:

• I’ve been on the trail several times and, as always, the ability for us to bring art into the environment always regrounds me.

• This year’s performances is more about passages and moving through this life that we live, where we’ve come, how I’ve come personally to a different place in my life being middle aged.

• Several of the sites that InnerRhythms Dance Theatre will be doing have represented something a little bit different.

• Overall, the event is always kind of a spiritual thing. And that hasn’t really changed this year. It’s not different than previous times. It’s that same journey.

• One of the pieces is called “Meadow Song” and it’s kind of a rite of passage for young women — friends being together.

• For me this year, passages has been more about the people who have passed on who I have known in my life.

• I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on my closest and dearest friend who I lost two years ago to breast cancer. And this piece, particularly “Meadow Song,” has put me in a lot more touch with her.

• One of the other spots called “Push” is about the cocoon of a butterfly, and then passing into freedom as the butterfly comes out of the cocoon. And that also involves two young women who are alumni of InnerRhythms and this is their fourth year — they have done every Trails and Vistas.

• The third [InnerRhythms] piece is about Nancy’s dream and the loss of her sister at a young age... It’s a piece is called “Everlasting Joy” and one of the dancers is kind of representing her sister in the dream. That was important to me to try to be able to manifest her dream and vision, which is kind of what brought about the whole theme for this year.

• I’m really looking forward to seeing Chief Red Hawk again, just because he offers such an incredible insight into our circle of life.

• I am really anxious to see the Balinese dancers because the colors are stunning and it’s something different. I have never seen anything like that before.

• The vistas of Castle Peak are incredible. And particularly the evening hikes will be special because the light is so soft out there.

• It’s a very peaceful feeling this year — it seems more centered and peaceful this year.

• I’m kind of curious to see how it all turns out in the end. There’s a bit of mystery there.

• It’s always different, but that’s part of what makes it so unique.
