The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival might hold its last Shakespeare performance on Aug. 19, but Midsummer Nights at Sand Harbor brings another full week of the arts to the Shakespeare Festival stage by the lake.
Aug. 22 & 23 Sierra Nevada Ballet helps Lake Tahoe fire victims
Sierra Nevada Ballet (SNB) will present “A Celebration of Genius II” on Aug. 22 and 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sand Harbor Warren Trepp Amphitheater on Lake Tahoe. This event, designed especially for the Shakespeare Festival, is filled with musical genius and spectacular dancing. Music from greats such as Chopin, Dave Brubeck, George Gerhswin and the fabulous Gian Carlo Menotti with some original work by SNB composers in residence, Susan Mazer and Dallas Smith and Andy Heglund.
The first half of this exciting program features original choreography designed to match each musical style with International Dance Stars including the artistry of Ballet Danseur Domingo Rubio, Russian born Eugene Petrov, and the “fastest feet in tap” of Sam Weber with the Sierra Nevada Ballet Company dancers and the live music of Susan Mazer and Dallas Smith.
“A Celebration of Genius II” will also feature the fabulous new percussion composition by Andy Heglund, with the fast paced choreography of Rosine Bena in an innovative collaboration, “Percussivlund.” Heglund will also add his talented flair to a marimba composition, “Restless,” featuring the SNB company.
The second half of the program will feature “The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore,” a madrigal comical story ballet with spectacular original costumes (considered works of art) commissioned by the library of Congress. This work was so popular when it was performed in the Spring of 2007 that SNB will perform it at Sand Harbor by audience request.
Sierra Nevada Ballet will also help the Lake Tahoe fire victims and other nonprofit organizations by donating 30 percent of each ticket for the performances in the name of the ticket holder. Ticket holders should send or give their ticket stub to SNB with their name, address and email address and the name of the group to whom they wish to donate the money. SNB will send the funds to the organization in their name. Those who do not specify an alternate nonprofit organization will have 30% sent to the Lake Tahoe fire victims.
Tickets range from $14 to $67. Buy tickets at LakeTahoeShakespeare.com or call (800) 74 -SHOWS.

A reader’s review of last week’s Reno Jazz Orchestra at the Carson City Brewery Arts Center on Aug. 19:
By Marty Donahoe The Reno Jazz Orchestra is a fine swinging big jazz band using predominately new, up-to-date arrangements. Many members have been, and still are, professional musicians in their own right and at least two are teachers in the UNR music school’s jazz program. Cami Thompson is a Reno native who has worked at many venues throughout the U.S. as a professional songstress.
Cami’s huge buoyant personality and stage presence, combined with a unique vocal range, was awesome. Her meld with this band was a “knock your socks off” experience for me, and their gig Tuesday evening at Sand Harbor for Angora Fire Relief will put on display this marriage made in Tahoe, er Heaven.
