In a world constantly moving, rushing and on the go, simplification is often a welcome change to the daily grind.
The world of ballet is no different. Chamber Ballet is the simplification of an art form that, in an age of theatrical spectacle so breathtaking, it can sometimes threaten to overwhelm the original message of the piece. In the end, the essentials of dance are music and movement.
On Aug. 24, Manhattan’s New Chamber Ballet will perform at North Tahoe high school’s dance room.
Artistic Director Miro Magloire has managed to attract dancers who combine youth and hard-won experience, and his guest choreographers reveal a dazzling variety of innovative talent. One of New Chamber Ballet’s dancers is a Tahoe native, Christin Hanna. Hanna started her training at the Truckee Parks and Recreation Department at age 5. At 12, she joined the Nevada Festival Ballet’s professional company and school, under the tutelage of dance legend Margaret Banks.
Banks recognized Hanna’s talent and guided her to summer programs at the Joffrey Ballet School and American Ballet Theater in New York. At 17, she joined Oakland Ballet, but in 2002 she returned to New York as a freelance ballerina. She spent the next two years training and dancing with Eglevsky Ballet, Connecticut Ballet, and Ballet New York. A break came in 2004 when Magloire invited her to join New Chamber Ballet for its upcoming New York performances and a tour to Köln, Germany. She has performed with New Chamber Ballet ever since, and last summer arranged a brief Tahoe residency for members of the company.
The company will present solos and duets from its extensive repertory. The works will include “Fall,” a suite set to the music of JS Bach, “Valses,” a sizzling tribute to South American music, and “Wanderlust,” a dramatic duet set to the music of Franz Schubert by guest choreographer Constantine Baecher of the Royal Danish Ballet.
A highlight will be the world premiere of a new pas de deux choreographed especially for the occasion by Magloire, who will also host the evening. The dancers will include Hanna and Damien Johnson of Dallas, Texas, a veteran of Dance Theater Harlem and the American Repertory Ballet.
New Chamber Ballet’s 2007 Tahoe residency will include a week long master class for local dance students and an outreach visit to the North Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club. Its public performance will be on Friday, Aug. 24th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Room of North Tahoe High School, 2945 Polaris Road, Tahoe City. Admission will be $20 and reservations are available by calling (530) 613-4363.
New Chamber Ballet’s Tahoe Project, now in its second year, is funded in part by the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation. For more information on Christin Hanna and the New Chamber Ballet, visit www.newchamberballet.com.
