The Tahoe Maritime Museum’s Truckee Annex Open Houses are family friendly events for locals and visitors. Join us from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 21 and from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12. Young kids can play in the sand box and float boats in a water tray, color and design their own sailor hats and tug boats. Older kids and adults love challenging themselves at the knot station, designing boats and checking out the incredible and beautiful old wooden boats in the Museum’s collection. This is a unique opportunity to the Museum’s collection at no cost.

The Open Houses offer the public a unique and entertaining viewing opportunity. In addition to seeing the Museum’s incredible collection of more than 20 award winning boats and interesting engines, a variety of handson activities for children and refreshments will be on hand.

The Museum will showcase Miss Tessa, a 1930 Dodge runabout powered by a four-cylinder Lycoming marine engine, in the prestigious 2007 Concours d’Elegance boat show. Miss Tessa was donated to the Maritime Museum by Bill Breuner and his family. Bill’s sister owned Tessa’s sister ship, Leakin’ Lena, which unfortunately now rests at the bottom of the lake. Both boats provided countless hours of family fun for young and old as they graced the shores of Lake Tahoe from the family’s home base in Homewood. Come by the Open House for a preview of Miss Tessa at no cost.

At the Open Houses, you can also get a close up of Godfather, a 26 foot Chris-Craft Runabout that was one of twenty-four boats built by Chris Smith & Sons Boat Co. in 1922. Godfather, the earliest known production Chris-Craft, was donated to the Tahoe Maritime Museum by Doug and Pam Elmore. Visitors can also see the 1941 Harris Dunphy, an excellent example of how construction techniques perfected over the years and were modified to accept power by motors as outboard motors became the preferred method of propulsion in the early years of the 20th century. In addition to the striking boat collection, the Truckee Warehouse showcases engines and maritime items of significance to region.

Come to the free Open Houses to learn more about Lake Tahoe’s maritime history and the Museum’s popular members-only boat rides for two to six people on Miss Tahoe, a 1939 28-foot Gar Wood runabout. The Ride Boat Program is available to the public beginning at the $60 membership level. The Open Houses offer: an amazing collection of historic wooden boats, engaging hands-on activities for kids and tasty snacks and refreshments.

The Museum’s site in Homewood currently includes a temporary museum trailer that is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Tuesday. For more information, call (530) 525-9253 or visit www.TahoeMaritimeMuseum.org. The Annex is located off of West River St. at 10434 River Park Place in Truckee (look for North Star Lighting and the bright blue roof of the Warehouse at the end of River Park Pl.).
