Everyone likes a view while they eat, and there aren’t many prettier than those found right here in the Sierra Nevada. From the panoramic sunsets over Tahoe you can see from upper Incline Village to the twinkling lights of historic downtown Truckee, the region has no shortage of outdoor deck and patio dining options.
While you can’t argue with a burger and beer on the river, some spots have fine dining to match their breathtaking views. So work up an appetite, pull up a chair and take in the view. Your table is ready…
TAHOE CITY
Christy Hill (530) 583–8551 115 Grove St. The intimate deck at Christy Hill is elevated above the shoreline and boasts one of the best views anywhere — the perfect match to their amazing cuisine.
Jake’s on the Lake (530) 583–0188 Boatworks Mall, Tahoe City Located in Boat Works Mall in Tahoe City, Jake’s has a large deck overlooking the Tahoe City Marina. Like co-owner/manager Tim High says “for six months out of the year, you can’t outcharm the place.”
River Grill (530) 581–2644 55 West Lake Blvd. On the north bank of the Truckee, River Grille offers plenty of fine dining options on a patio complete with river views from every table and fire pits for when the nights get chilly.
River Ranch Lodge (530) 583–4264 Highway 89 and Alpine Meadows Rd. Located at the base of Alpine Meadows road, the River Ranch is the stopping point for float rafters on the Truckee River, making it an ideal place to grab some nachos and beers after a leisurely summer afternoon on the river. River Ranch also hosts concerts on its deck on Thursday evenings throughout the summer.
Sol y Lago (530) 583–0358 760 North Lake Blvd. Sol y Lago offers eclectic Latin cuisine inspired by the mountainous regions of Latin America and Spain as well as a deck with one of the most beautiful views in Tahoe City.
Wolfdale’s Cuisine Unique (530) 583–5700 640 North Lake Blvd. While the deck here is not the biggest on the lake, the view over the Tahoe City Marina is lovely. And the Asian fusion cuisine would be worth the trip even if the view was of a parking structure.
NORTH SHORE
Jason’s Beachside Grille (530) 546–3315 8338 North Lake Blvd. Located in the center of Kings Beach, Jason’s has a huge deck right at the edge of the Kings Beach State Recreation Area. The spot has excellent ribs and hosts live music outside often.
Spindleshanks (530) 546-2191 6873 North Lake Blvd. The covered and heated deck and patio at Spinsleshanks is the best spot to enjoy the fusion of Southwestern, East Coast, California and Hawaiian cuisine that comes from the kitchen.
NORTHSTAR
Rubicon Pizza Bistro (530) 562-2199 In the Village at Northstar Right in the heart of the Northstar Village, the patio at Rubicon overlooks the ice/rollerskating rink and the main events plaza in the Village. The 10 tables feature umbrellas to keep guests out of the sun and a full bar and menu outside.
SQUAW VALLEY
Mamasake (530) 584-0110 In the Village at Squaw Valley Oddly-shaped brightly-painted tables await those who choose to eat outside at the lively Mamasake sushi restaurant. The patio might also be the best spot to enjoy their famous $5 beer and a handroll happy hour special.
INCLINE VILLAGE
Big Water Grille (775) 833–0606 341 Ski Way Located in upper Incline Village at the base of Diamond Peak ski resort, Big Water not only offers some delicious regional faire, but also has one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Tahoe on the North Shore. Facing southwest, it’s best during sunset.
Crosby's Grill Pub and Casino (775) 833–1030 868 Tahoe Blvd. Whether you want to watch the big game, try your luck at video poker, or just enjoy a hearty meal without breaking the bank, Crosby’s has got you covered. They guarantee three things: you’ll enjoy a good meal for your buck, you’ll have a good time and you won’t go away hungry. And you can eat outside.
Hacienda de la Sierra (775) 831–8300 931 Tahoe Blvd. Located in Incline Village kitty-corner from the Raley’s Shopping Center, Hacienda de la Sierra is the quintessential American Mexican food spot. It’s large, spacious and serves piping hot dishes that fill you up until you can’t walk. Hacienda is known for its happy hour, which is extensive.
T's Mesquite Rotisserie (775) 831–2832 901 Tahoe Blvd. Some of the tastiest and best valued rotisserie food anywhere. Check out the tri–tip burrito and enjoy it on the patio.
SODA SPRINGS
Ice Lakes Lodge (530) 426-7661 1111 Soda Springs Road, Soda Springs, Calif. The Alpine style lodge offers a picturesque dining room overlooking Serene Lakes, but it is the alfresco dining on the expansive deck overlooking the lake and beach that is the tough reservation to get in the summertime.
TRUCKEE
Cottonwood (530) 587-5711 1042 Old Brockway Road, Truckee Located in a neighborhood named Hilltop, you’d expect Cottonwood’s deck to have a great view. Does it ever. Enjoy a beverage or a meal while watching the sun set over downtown Truckee. And be sure to catch the live music on the deck every Thursday and Friday evening.
Coyote Moon Golf Course Bar & Grill (530) 587-0886 10685 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee Up on the hill overlooking Donner Lake and downtown Truckee, the Coyote Moon Bar & Grill features a huge dining room, but it’s the outdoor patio that is typically full of golfers and others looking to enjoy a bite.
Dragonfly (530) 587-0557 10118 Donner Pass Road (upstairs), Truckee Overlooking historic Commercial Row in downtown Truckee, Dragonfly has been serving up Asian fusion delicacies on their patio for years. And now, with the addition of a sushi bar in the newly expanded restaurant, you can eat a roll while watching the trains roll through town.
The Lodge (530) 587-9455 12850 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee The decks surrounding The Lodge’s dining room and bar look out over the picturesque golf course at Tahoe Donner. It’s a great place to enjoy a cocktail and an appetizer after a round of golf or just for the heck of it.
Smokey’s Kitchen (530) 582-4535 12036 Donner Pass Road, Truckee It’s a barbecue joint — of course they’re going to have picnic tables outside. Smokey’s melt-in-yo-mouth ribs just seem to taste better on the patio.
