You know summer’s here when you find yourself reading the same office e-mail over and over again and find yourself taking a cigarette break to catch a few minutes in the sun – and you don’t even smoke.

I know how you feel. It’s tough staying glued to the computer screen eight hours a day when unbelievably perfect days in Tahoe seem to coincide with the work week. But there’s always the weekend to hike, bike, swim, or just lounge around the lake with friends – and I’ve got the top eight essentials to have a fabulous summer on the lake.

Swimsuit — Duh. These aren’t the nude beaches like they have in France, so you’re going to have to get a decent suit. Ladies, I have only one very important tip when shopping for swim wear — take a truthful friend with you for an honest opinion. Stripping down to an itty bitty bikini in fluorescent dressing room lighting is one of the most dreadful punishments come summer, but having a friend along who sees you — and not your flaws — is the best way to find something that fits and flatters your body. And guys, just one bit of advice: Don’t let your board shorts sag. Just say no to crack.

Sunscreen — Because stories of my mom and her high school friends literally baking themselves, lathering baby oil and iodine into their skin, simply horrifies me. Make sure you wear at least SPF 15 if you’re going to be outside exposed to the sun, and don’t forget your face, ears, or toes. With all the different sunscreen options — spray, lotion, clear, or colorful — there’s no excuse for a bright red sunburn.

Sandals
— Flip-flops are easiest to slip into when it’s hot and you’re in a hurry, and I have found my favorites in Havaianas. I don’t know what makes the rubber so comfy, but I live in the $18 Brazilian sandals, plus they come in about a zillion colors and prints.

Beach towel — Leave the tiny towels at home, for about $10 you can pick up an oversized beach towel at Target. Ahh… more room to relax and soak up some rays.

Beach bag — Grab a big bag to fit all your weekend goodies. Old Navy always has cheery, fun summer bags to fit everything you’ll need for a day at the lake for very little prices.

Sunglasses — Shades have never been such a popular fashion accessory. From aviators to Jackie O-inspired looks, find a pair that suits your face shape and your summer lifestyle.

Hat — Shield your face from the sun while looking oh-so-hot at the same time. I do have a soft spot for straw cowboy hats lakeside, but baseball caps and wide-brimmed hats will also keep you looking cool.

Your friends — the best accessory for a summer filled with good times and memorable adventures.
