So here’s the scoop on shorts this summer; they’re getting shorter.
Yes ladies, I am talking like booty short-shorts that you can’t really sit down in, much less bend over without revealing your bum. And while most guys will agree that shorter is always better, I’m going to argue that, well, they’re wrong.
The shorter style might look slammin’ on a slim, long-legged model strutting down the runway, however, they don’t really flatter the majority of women’s bodies. And I know we’ve all played fashion police before when a woman walks down the street wearing a pair of booty-hugging bottoms she has no business wearing. Not cute.
That’s why I’m writing this column. Just because all the fashion magazines are pushing the short-shorts trend as the “look of the summer” doesn’t mean all ladies should follow suit.
What to wear
There’s a ton of wardrobe options to flatter whatever body type a woman has to make her look fabulous. You just need to know how to put it all together to avoid a fashion violation.
At a clothing boutique I worked at in Chico, we repeatedly sold out of this one particular style of black capri-length pants — mainly because they fit everyone who tried them on and could be dressed up or down. If you don’t have a go-to pair of black capris in your closet, I suggest you add those to your shopping list immediately since they will serve as a summer staple item you’ll reach for time after time.
What style should you buy? Petite gals can pull off a pair of slimmer-cut capris, which look fresh worn with flats or strappy sandals. Curvy girls should pay attention to proportions and make sure the drape of the fabric accentuates your “assets.” Also, don’t purchase a pair with lots of extra detailing or buttons, especially on the back pockets; it’ll only draw attention where you don’t want it.
During the hottest summer months, I live in a pair of denim bermudas I cut into shorts that fall just below the knee. That, to me, is the most flattering length of shorts for all body types since they’re not too short but still show a little leg. My fashion rules are the same as above to wear this trend. If you’re a bootylicious gal, don’t even think about grabbing a printed pair of bermudas. The best part about the bermuda length is that you can slide into your flip-flops during the day, and slip on your stilettos at night and they look great either way.
So there you go, the long and short of it, in my fashionista opinion at least.
