Ever since Johnny Depp swaggered onto the big screen as Captain Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean” I've noticed the pirate fashion catch hold in some way or another. But not just anyone can look as good as Johnny does wearing thick black eyeliner, beads in his dread-locked beard, and flowy white blouses.

His famous pirate wardrobe, also inspired by Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards, has managed to trickle down to the masses. This spring, models walked the plank in glitzy rebellious garb.

Rhinestone-studded T-shirts, Goth black nails, slouchy leather boots, layers of long necklaces, and anything striped mimics the look of a pirate. Beware of overdoing this trend, as there is a fine line between a fashion statement and the $19.99 ready-to-wear Halloween costume found at major retailers.

However, there is something to be said about playing the part of a pirate - wearing a skull and crossbones emblem allows you to be a self-proclaimed badass. Arrgh! I fell in love with this look because it's not all frills and bows. Pirate style is edgy and just a bit rough and tough.

Here are a few tips to capture Captain Jack's swashbuckling style without going overboard:

• Sport a striped T-shirt with a pair of skinny jeans tucked into knee-high boots.

• To disguise an unruly 'do, tie on a brightly-colored scarf.

• Shine up a casual outfit with layers of gold or silver jewelry. Hoop earrings, chunky cocktail rings, and bangles can make even the simplest ensemble stand out.

• Wrap a wide belt around a loose-fitting tunic or sundress for a more feminine version of Captain Jack's billowy blouse.

• Menswear-inspired vests are best worn with lacy camisoles or sporty ribbed tanks underneath.

• Accessorize any look with a soft leather handbag, preferably adorned with oversized buckles and hardware.
