A number of new events this year promises to pump new life into the 26th annual Snow Festival, to take place March 2-10 on the North Shore.

“One of the things we’re trying to do this year is to do off-the-wall and unique things,” said Ruth Schnabel, Snow Festival executive director. “We really have made an effort to get people to come up with creative events.”

Some of the new events included will cater to the entire family, while others will appeal to dog lovers. Food lovers and bar-goers have plenty of options to choose from as well.

“There’s a lot of fun, new events,” said Pam Pokorny, operations manager for Snow Festival.

Snow Festival will kick-off Friday, March 2, immediately with a new event. The dog agility course at the Village at Squaw Valley is hosted by Tails by the Lake, and will feature a course made entirely out of snow. Prizes will be awarded to the top three most agile dogs and the $10 entry fee will benefit the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.

From 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, kids of all ages are invited to paint wooden bears for free at the North Tahoe Arts Center in Tahoe City.

One event that both Schnabel and Pokorny are excited about is the Tahoe City Downtown Association’s Wacky Human Bowling, which includes teams pushing one another in saucers down snow hills and into blow-up bowling pins. The groups are divided by age, and helmets are required. Prizes will be awarded for wackiest helmet, attire and bowling winners in each group. The competition will begin 9 a.m. Sunday, March 4, at the Tahoe City Golf Course.

“It’s a new, regenerated event,” Pokorny notes.

An old event that will take on a new feel this year because of a change of venue is the dog pull event. This popular event challenges dogs of all sizes to pull weighted sleighs over the snow. While it has traditionally been held at area bars, the dog pull event this year has been moved to the Cobblestone in Tahoe City, allowing the whole family to participate. Registration begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 4, with the competition starting at noon.

For those into bar games, Tahoe City’s Pete N’ Peter’s will host Bar Game Olympics Tuesday, March 6 at 6 p.m. Teams of two will compete in games of pool, shuffle board and dice for the title of “Best Bar Olympic Team.” Competitors are encouraged to dress in their best Olympic team garb for a best dressed prize. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top five.

The next night, on Wednesday, March 5, Pete N’ Peter’s will be host to another new event, this time pitting area bartenders against one another in the Fastest Server Contest. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and prizes will be awarded to the top three bartenders.
The Resort at Squaw Creek will be host to the Brooms, Boards and Boots event Thursday, March 8 at 2 p.m. This family-friendly triathlon consists of broomball, snowshoeing and cross country skiing or hiking. There will be an awards ceremony, prizes and live music following the vent at Sandy’s Pub.

On Friday, March 9, Sol y Lago in Tahoe City will be home to a Mountain Asada Fiesta with food, drinks and live music. The “must be at” event starts at 6 p.m.

To wind down after a packed week of activities, the North Tahoe Family Resource Center will host the Snow Feast and Fiesta at the North Tahoe Conference Center in Kings Beach Saturday, March 10, at 6 p.m. Although the event has taken place before, this year will feature live music with local favorites Mumbo Gumbo. This will be a no alcohol, community event-oriented family event.

With a number of new events to choose from, including tried and true classics like the Polar Bear Swim, there is literally something for everyone at this year’s Snow Festival.

“I think it’s getting more important to bring the community back together,” Pokorny said.
