Meet the five promising princesses of teh North Tahoe/Truckee area. One lucky young lady will be crowned this year's Snow Festival Queen.
Katie Freeman Senior, North Tahoe High School Katie Freeman is the senior class President at North Tahoe High School. She is a true Tahoe girl who enjoys camping, skiing, going to the beach, playing softball and Capoeira. On the weekends she works as an Alpine Meadows Kids Camp instructor and as a hostess/busser at Firesign Café. She is involved in leadership at NTHS, working on prom committee and challenge day. Freeman was a Girls State Nominee and runner up in last year’s selections. Freeman is also very active in the community, and through her church. She has gone on several mission trips and taught A+ vacation Bible school, helped with “The Well,” project MANA, the Lions Club, organized a blood drive, worked the ski swap and the Big Mac Feed twice. Freeman says that involvement in the community has helped her grow as a person shown her how important community is.
Anja Wittels Sophomore, North Tahoe High School One of this sophomore’s biggest pet peeves is intelligent students who spend all their free time sitting on the couch watching TV. That’s why her life is an enjoyable adventure of sports and extra-curricular activities. She is a star on the North Tahoe High School tennis team, member of the high school ski team and volunteered last summer at Obexer’s Sailing Camp teaching young kids to sail small boats. Wittels is also involoved in Interact Club, a Rotary Club for the school put on by students, as well as Youth In Action, formerly Students Against Drunk Driving. Wittels is also active in the leadership program and A.S.B. at NTHS and is currently working to bring a recycling program to the high school. One of Wittels favorite activities is as a drummer in the North Tahoe Jazz Band and percussionist with the Wind Ensemble.
Erin Schreiber Senior, North Tahoe High School This North Tahoe High School senior has gone to school and lived in both Truckee and Tahoe City and plans on traveling to Chico for college. She has done many things in her life, including gymnastics, dance, soccer, softball, volleyball, band, catechism and girl scouts. Currently she is involved in the Leadership program at NTHS, and will soon be starting another track season. Outside of school she loves to ski, wakeboard, knee board, travel and spend time with her friends and family. She has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten and most recently joined the local philanthropy group Queen of Hearts, where she will be part of “The Next Generation” commitee focused on ideas and activities for younger memebers of Queen of Hearts. Schreiber hopes to raise enough money for her sponser, Choices Trasitional Services, to do something special in its mission to teach independence and life skills to the developmentally disabled.
Alcyen Johnson Senior, North Tahoe High School An avid athlete, Johnson loves to run track, play volleyball, snow ski, mountain bike, ride horses and water ski. She has held a continuous winter job for three years at West Shore Sports where she enjoys transfering her love and knowledge of skiing to Tahoe’s visitors. During the summer she works at First Class Detailing and Chris Craft Lake Tahoe. Socializing is something this 17 year old has found she excells at. When coupled with travelling, she found that her social skills blossomed as she met many different people from many different parts of the world. Johnson is running for Snow Festival Queen because she though it sounded spontaneous and exciting - and those are two words she uses to describe herself - spontaneous and exciting.
Mariesa Yeoman Senior, Sierra High School Yeoman believes that helping the community helps her to further her own education. Because of that philosophy she has accomplished much in her high school tenure. As a member of the Civil Air Patrol she has taken part in many holiday events as well as taking part in the Duck Races, bingo nights, Renaissance Faire and the Cannibal Cruise. Last year, Yeoman conviced the Truckee Town Concil to adopt the small town of Bayou La Batre, Ala. as a sister city after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. For her senior project she is working to raise money for the Tahoe Forest Hospital Hospice and TTUSD clothing fund. Yeoman plays volleyball, basketball and goes ice skating. She takes part in a weekly dance class that performed at the Renaissance Faire and is involved in modeling and acting. She also has a passion for singing country music. She loves camping, river swimming, hiking and fishing and goes gold mining with her family every summer. After a volunteer experience last summer, she has a job as a speical needs aid.
