Let’s stipulate that no one is satisfied with their physical appearance … and remove body fat, angles instead of curves, bad hair cuts, etc. from the list of excuses not to dress the part for Valentine’s Day. Attitude is much more important. Clothing should enhance what’s going on inside your head, make you feel good about yourself and present just one of the many aspects of your personality.
We all wear different hats during the day — competent business person, caring and loving parent/friend, fantasy lover in the bedroom, etc. etc. Wearing something different conveys that you don’t want to be pigeonholed into a stereotyped image and that you don’t take yourself too seriously.
Valentine’s Day is an excuse to play a different part than you normally do. Surprise yourself and that special someone.
Sex Goddess in the bedroom The Look: Not so subtle, ready for action — don’t worry about comfort because this is the outfit that gets worn just briefly. Leg Avenue’s Sexy line of Valentine’s lingerie is perfect.
What’s hot: Garter belts with stockings, bustiers, baby doll lingerie sets for gals; silky boxers and thongs for guys; borrow hers if you don’t have any.
Tips: Silky robes/cover-ups to do just that, and give you the element of surprise. Get dressed ahead of time; candles are better mood lighting than the overhead light.
Testing your WOW! power (Not in the workplace, please!) The Look: Head turning, not so subtle — Wear the OnGossamer padded bra instead of your minimizer bra. Tight jeans that show off your derriere. Wear the jeans you promised yourself not to wear until you lost five pounds and accessorize them with a glitzy belt that makes them look like you just bought them.
What’s hot: 80s style — Leggings with lace cuffs, short skirts, sequins and glitz for gals; Guys: colorful, shiny, tailored shirts and jackets with tight faux snakeskin pants.
Tips: Vintage clothing can provide a unique look for the younger set and can help the “mature” dresser look stylish instead of looking like they were shopping in the juniors department.
Smooth and Subtle The Look: Shapely silhouettes that hint at romance, not announce it. You are looking for love (hearts, flowers and maybe chocolate) in all the right places. If you get it right, he’ll respond with a marriage proposal instead of sweet nothings.
What’s hot: It’s all in the touch … cashmere, ultra suede, velvet, silk shirts for guys Tips: Spanx brand Hide and Sleek panty ensures no VPL (visible panty line) for those of us not into thongs! Add mystery with a feather boa.
Sweet and Innocent The Look: How could you even think I would… What’s hot: Pink, winter white anything, ruffled blouses/shirts for both sexes; Try a high-necked coat dress or be sure that they can see just a hint of cleavage.
Tips: Attitude is everything. Play hard to get and practice your look of righteous indignation in case someone gets suggestive with you.
Not So Innocent The Look: The skirt is just a little too short, the jeans a little too tight … you’re ready for romance anywhere!
What’s hot: Pleaser brand Go-go boots, bedroom heels with anything; Leg Avenue tanga shorts in any color or, try their school girl costume with anklet socks.
Tips: Be prepared for anything! If you get upset with MCPs (an old term from the 70s referring to guys who make chauvinistic comments), don’t try this look on a first date!
Chains of Love The Look: The biker look, chain necklaces; is that choker really a collar… Guys, you want to look like a bad boy that her mother wouldn’t approve of.
What’s hot: Leather pants, vests; 60s rock star vintage; add a wig? Girls, try adding fishnet fingerless gloves or arm warmers.
Tips: Bring the Leg Avenue rhinestone whip to bed, not to the restaurant!
Keep in mind that when someone doesn’t respond the way you want, it is “all about me” and rarely about you. Please yourself first. And, if your heart gets broken, I recommend retail therapy!
