There are events that take place on skis, and then there are events that take place on skis.

Slalom, GS, even half pipe and aerials are events.

Freeskiing or extreme competitions are another. And then there are extreme telemark contests — these genres separate the skiers from the posers.

Then there are events that prove in one fell swoop who is the best of the best. Events so gnarly, so insane that normal people would grimace just watching from the lift line.

This is the realm of the Chinese Dowhill.

“What isa the @#!*%& the Chinese Downhill,” our beloved friend Kendo asks.

For anyone who hasn’t seen “Hot Dog The Movie” (get your ass up and go see it) the Chinese Downhill is an event with unlimited competitors, each one putting in a set amount of money to a purse.

Use this example from the movie:
“Hey Squirrel, spot me 50 bucks.”
“Fifty?”
“Make it 40.”

After a no-holds-barred race from the top of the mountain to the bottom the winner takes the purse (and in the case of the movie, the FIS world freestyle trophy).

Competitors don motorcycle armor and helmets, spikes on their gloves, mauls instead of poles and anything else they can think of as a weapon or defensive tool.

Skiers push, punch, kick, cutoff and knock down anyone in their path.

It’s a race to the death, through windows at Gold Coast, over roofs, off cliffs, through trees and over picnic tables with the first one to the bottom crowned king.

In all seriousness, the Chinese Downhill might be the one race to prove who’s the best and strongest overall skier.

After all, “The Chinese Downhill decides everything.”

As Rudolph Garmisch says, “It is the only way.”
