Who’s your style icon?
From the seventh grade on mine has always been Gwen Stefani. Her signature look — perfectly-platinum blonde hair, scarlet red lipstick, and funky cool clothes — caught my attention when I was just a youngster in junior high with no sense of personal style whatsoever (i.e. I wore overalls and scrunchies in my hair).
As I’ve come into my own I still look at Gwen’s fashion statements and I am amazed and impressed that she’s been able to appear polished and utterly unique in practically every picture I’ve seen. Gwen never looks unkempt or messy. Yes, she’s definitely had some of those what-were-you-thinking-where-was-your-stylist moments in fashion (remember her bright pink hair and braces?), but at least she’s taking a risk and making a statement while doing it.
In 2006 a handful of well-known celebrities were fashion trendsetters.
Let’s see, there was Nicole Richie with her gigantic white Jackie O-style sunglasses and vintage garb, Jessica Simpson’s preppy headbands and sky-high heels, Sienna Miller’s mod suede boots and mini skirts, and Beyonce’s curve-clinging dresses.
And I can’t leave out the biggest surprise trend of the year - black nail polish.
But what makes these gals style icons? Confidence. These celebs have developed their signature look with the help of a few stylish pieces of clothing and a healthy boost of attitude.
When you think about it, none of these celebrities have gone and reinvented the wheel when it comes to fashion. Gwen’s latest look originated in the 1950s, although today, the knee-length skirts, leopard-print cardigans, and perfectly-coifed updos appear fresh and innovative when she struts down the red carpet.
My point is, it doesn’t take a wardrobe overhaul to create your own signature look. So c’mon, be brave in 2007 and try something new — just not overalls, please.
