They call it America’s Adventure Place. And while much of the time that may just be Public Relations spin, over Memorial Day Weekend Reno’s new slogan will ring true as the Silver Sage Adventure Race takes place on Saturday, May 27, in the heart of downtown.
Competitions include a sprint race designed for beginner racers and less extreme athletes with finishing times from two to four hours. The more challenging general race has finishing times of six to 12 hours. Both events run simultaneously through downtown Reno, the High Sierra Desert and the Truckee River, beginning in Wingfield Park.
According to race organizer Todd Jackson or Seventh Wave Productions, “You’re going to have downtown Reno, the Truckee River, the forest, Rancho San Rafael park... It’s kind of an urban/rural mixture, which I think is neat.”
The Silver Sage requires teams to mountain bike and run or hike through various terrain (with altitude gain), utilize a map and compass throughout the course and complete an innovative riverteering task – traveling along, over, through and on the chilly Truckee River. The sprint race will require athletes to inner tube and complete special tests throughout the course.
Pre-race clinics are available free to athletes Friday, May 26 at Wingfield Park. The Silver Sage Sprint race is open to two-person teams, coed, all-male or all-female. The six to 12 hour event is open to teams of two, three or four all-male, all-female, or coed, as well as individuals. Teams can register through May 25, with late fees applying after May 19. Teams entering in multiple Big Blue Adventure Races are eligible for discount registration. Racers can register and find teammates at www.bigblueadventure.com.
The Big Blue Adventure Series, produced and developed by Seventh Wave Productions, has grown in popularity and success since its inception in 2001 and now includes 12 competitions, including 24-hour formats, sprint races and an off-road triathlon.
