So it’s that time of year. The sun is out, and it’s time to put on the bikini that has been wadded up in your dresser drawer for the past eight months.
Now you have a big choice ahead of you. Do you A) Throw caution to the wind and show your pasty white skin to the world without protection, hoping that you’ll be able to show your legs in public without shame, like, next week? Or do you B) Put on some of that goopy white stuff and a hat?
We know what the experts and your mother would say, so here are some things that will make your sun-filled days pain-free and fun.
Sunblock Sunscreens come in all shapes and sizes — lotions, gels, and sprays — so there are plenty of options. At our high altitude, be sure that you use one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and that it offers at least SPF 30. Plus, who wants premature wrinkles, anyway?
Hawaiian Tropic All-Day Waterproof 45-plus $10.99 at Rite-Aid in Truckee Contains UVA and UVB sun protection. It’s probably the cheapest stuff you can find for the level of quality.
Sonya Dakar’s 365 SPF 30 $35 at Trilogy Spa at the Village at Squaw Valley It’s a year round protection with pure lavender and orange extracts, titanium dioxide — oil and paba free. UVA and UVB Broad Spectrum Protection is formulated to guard against premature aging and discoloration.
Skin Ceuticals SPF 45 $35.70 at Trilogy Spa at the Village at Squaw Valley Active use broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunblock with transparent zinc oxide (Z-Cote), and it’s waterproof and sweatproof. Ideal for active Tahoe lifestyles and vigorous outdoor activity.
Arcona Tinted Reozone $36 at Trilogy Spa at the Village at Squaw Valley This lightweight tinted SPF will block UVA and UVB rays to prevent you from premature aging.
After the sun So the damage is done, and now it’s time to hydrate. Use these potions with vitamin E and aloe vera to feel better and look better after a blistering day in the sun.
Fry Baby After Sun Lotion $9.50 at Splash Bath and Body at the Village at Squaw Valley Splash Bath and Body has created an aloe vera-enriched after-sun lotion to help repair, replenish and rejuvenate sun-drenched skin. Quench your skin’s thirst with generous portions of aloe vera and vitamin E. This healing lotion slows the aging process and helps maintain your skin’s moisture balance. Recommended for all skin types.
Sonya Dakar Omega-3 Repair Complex Irritation $35 at Trilogy Spa at the Village at Squaw Valley Repair irritated skin cells with 100 percent botanical Omega3 and Omega6 fatty acids, infused with bergamont and chamomile to soothe and calm delicate skin. These botanical ingredients help diminish your bothersome itching and sunkissed skin.
Toys for fun in the Sun We’re not all serious about how you spend your time in the sun. Throw on some sunblock and head over to the drug store or online for these products that are going to make you wish the fall season will never come.
Space Water Blaster squirt gun $3.99 at Rite-Aid in Truckee
All in One Pool Set $12.99 at Rite-Aid in Truckee This 40-by-10-inch pool comes with a ball, swim ring and blow-up dolphin. Who needs a real pool anyway?
Cool Blast Handheld Mister $14.95 at amazon.com This portable hand-held mister cools the air by up to 30 degrees. No batteries are needed. It’s also great for misting delicate plants.
Sunless tan This is the real fake-bake. The sunless tan has only improved over the years, and no one may ever know the difference if you’re stuck in the office while it’s sunny outside. Neutrogena Sunless Tanning Kit $19.99 at Rite-Aid in Truckee All you need for a perfect natural-looking sunless tan.
