Nevada City, one of the more entertaining cities in the Gold Country of the Sierra foothills, is only an hour drive from Tahoe and provides one of the best spots to socialize, hear some live music and party for an evening.

With a quaint little pedestrian friendly downtown, tasty and reasonable eateries and about a handful bars all within walking distance, Nevada City has all anyone could need for an easy to access weekend getaway.

For nightlife just head downtown and explore, hot spots are the Mine Shaft and for live music Cooper’s Saloon — which usually has music every day of the week.

For daytime adventure, head up Highway 49 toward Downeville to the South Fork of the Yuba river. The gently flowing crystal clear water is perfect for cliff jumping, tunnel diving, rapid floating and general gnarbuckling.

For mountain biking the area’s possibilities are nearly endless, but head to neighboring Grass Valley for the Empire Mine area, a group of single track and horse roads that wind through historic gold mines and forested wonderland.

Whatever you do outside, watch out for poison oak in the early summer months, it is ruthless in the foothills and in no way pleasant.

How to get there:

Take Interstate 80 west from Truckee. Get off at the Highway 20 exit toward Nevada City. For 27 miles, wind along the pleasant two-lane curves of 20 until you come into Nevada City.
