To commemorate the eighth anniversary of the Deux Gros Nez - an eclectic downtown Reno, Nevada, coffeehouse bedecked wall-to-wall with cycling memorabilia - owner, Tim Healion, threw a mighty party and decided to toss a bicycle race into the soup. Word got out to local masters class racers and the Mighty Tour de Nez Twilight Criterium was born.
After ten years of winning the hearts of participants and spectators alike, and earning the exalted title of “The Coolest Bike Race In America” by California Cyclist magazine, the Tour de Nez expanded to include an National Racing Calendar (NRC) pro race, enabling Reno to reclaim its roots as a cycling mecca and setting the race on its journey to becoming the premier celebration of cycling in the country.
The 2006 Tour de Nez is set to be the coolest bike festival in America. Healion’s hard work has rewarded the race with top NRC omnium points for the three -day, four-stage pro race. Before finishing in downtown Reno at the Mighty Tour de Nez Criterium, the pros and hand-cyclists will race a time trial on the country roads of Verdi and a criterium in historic Truckee, California. Pro cyclists from around the world will compete in the 108-mile Tahoe Road Race, starting in Tahoe City, California, riding along the sunny shores of shimmering Lake Tahoe, and climbing Brockway Summit.
There’s still the Biggest Kiddie Race in the West, for the future pros, the 10th Annual Clunker Classic, for the wannabes, the bicycle messenger races, for the guys that know what bikes are really for, and recreational rides for the folks who really know how to enjoy the bike. Ask anyone who has been coming to this race and they’ll tell you: The Tour de Nez is hot. You’d better get out there this year so you can be one of the people who say, “I can remember the Tour de Nez when ....”
