As the intermittent weather of spring begins to give way to the consistent, ideal sun of Lake Tahoe in the summer, days begin to blend together, Wednesday afternoons begin to feel like Saturday. The sun is always shining and it always feels like a great day to shirk all responsibilities and get outside.

Last Friday afternoon, the newly formed Tahoe World Action Team — made up of such characters as Big Red, The Dandy, The Slugger, and Queen of the Greens — decided it was as good a time as any to procrastinate, leave the office and explore some of the finer outdoor activities our area has to offer.

We decided that it’s always a good time for some golf.

Armed with our finest golf attire, pockets full of mix-and-match lost-and-found golf balls and enough beer to … well, you get the idea, we hit the tee.

Old Brockway Golf Course in Kings Beach served as the chosen spot for this particular adventure.

Established in 1926 and usually open nearly a month before any other local courses, as well as being an Audubon Certified course, Brockway is a largely flat, fairly tame nine hole course which meanders its way through the tall pine forests of Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista.

With no self proclaimed golfers on Team Action, we quickly abandoned scorekeeping, deciding that whoever lost the least amount of balls on the day would be crowned winner.

The fairway of the first hole on Brockway runs parallel to Highway 267. Each one of us was certain we were going to slice the ball off into oncoming traffic and shatter a windshield.

Somehow, we all kept our balls on target.

There is something liberating about strolling through a well manicured golf course on a Friday afternoon, steadily sipping on some Blue Ribbon and taking the occasional swipe at a golf ball.

In the end, I have no idea who won. But as we all spent time in the woods searching for golf balls, we killed an afternoon hiking, socializing and engaging in an age-old past time that anyone around these parts can enjoy.

It’s no wonder so many people do business on the golf course.
