Different Strokes Kayak owner Jon Fairchild has been whitewater kayaking for more than 12 years and his enthusiasm and knowledge for whitewater kayaking is contagious, we wanted to know how we could get started in the sport.
The first step is getting the gear, Fairchild recommends lessons and then it is just all about practice, practice, practice. When Fairchild first got started whitewater kayaking more than a decade ago, he recalls there were about 6 to 10 kayakers in the city of Reno.
The sport has grown a lot in the past five years and now there are approximately 80 to 100 new paddlers, maybe more. The gear: Kayak Paddle PFD Booties Helmet Dry top/ wet suit Safety gear: throw bags (rope), float bag and medical kit Basic cost is between $1,200 and $1,300 (used) and roughly $2,000 brand new. The best thing is that once you make the initial investment of the gear, the rivers are free.
