The Reno River Festival appeals to athletes of all levels, returning to its original competition format of hosting both open and invitational competitions in 2008. Invites have already been extended to last year’s River Festival champions Jay Kincaid and Tanya Faux, and world freestyle kayak champions Eric Jackson and Ruth Gordon, as well as other top finishers including Emily Jackson, Stephen Wright, Bryan Kirk and Nikki Kelly. Open freestyle competitions take place Friday, giving amateurs a chance at paddling with the pros during Saturday’s professional competition and the weekend’s boatercross races have shifted to an entirely open format.

“Last year we had a completely open competition that included pros and amateurs in all categories,” said Jim Litchfield, competition producer and co-owner of the Reno River Festival. “By going back to the old format of both invitational and open comps, it allows the amateurs a better chance at succeeding against the pros. The amateurs that win the open competition get to advance and compete against the pros the next day. It’s more of a fair competition this way.”

Registration and check-in for the open freestyle competitions at the 5th annual Reno River Festival begins Thursday, May 8 and runs through Friday, May 9. The open freestyle competition takes place Friday, May 9 along with boatercross qualifying rounds, which continue through Saturday, May 10. Invitational check-in takes place Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10 with the pro freestyle rounds happening from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10. The final round of the boatercross competition takes place Sunday, May 11.
