Guided by the orange light of September’s full “corn” moon, Kevin Hickey, the owner and director of Tahoe Adventure Company, led a group of us novice night-time kayakers through Lake Tahoe’s crystal waters for the “Sunset, Full Moon and Astronomy Paddle.”
The night’s skies were far from ideal, the stars eclipsed by clouds and smoke settling from a nearby Sierra fire. However, the elements set the stage for a spectacular moonrise, like a pumpkin climbing into the sky.
We paddled from Tahoe Vista toward Carnelian Bay to a soundtrack of gently lapping waves and Hickey’s Trivial Pursuit-like teachings about the tides, planets, stars and moon. Did you know that Pink Floyd led us astray and that there actually is no “dark side of the moon?” (Though the same side of the moon always faces earth). Or that because there is no atmosphere and therefore no wind or water erosion, an astronaut’s footprint will remain unchanged on the moon’s surface?
Despite the hazy night sky, the leisurely paddle through America’s second deepest lake was a treat for mind, body and soul alike. After a busy summer season, there’s nothing like grounding yourself and communing with nature in our very own high sierra treasure — the Lake of the Sky.
