Rousting acoustic pickin’ accompanied by sweet voices make The Rusty Strings a killer combo in this day and age. Add a heaping helping of camaraderie and you get an inimitable blend of kindred spirits generating rootsy ethereality.
Their sound rings true. Fatally flawed relationships, comedic truths, road trip fantasies, the arcane and banal, the dark and unknown, are a few of the maxims woven through the songbook of The Rusty Strings. But don’t let all these fancy words scare you. As anybody who has been to the show can tell you, they host a great party.
And a party they have planned, for Saturday, April 19 at the Crystal Bay Casino starting at 10 p.m. The party is to kick off their debut CD “The Roadside Fishmonger.”
A Q&A with the Rusty Strings:
Tahoe World: What can people expect from your new CD “The Roadside Fishmonger?”
Rusty Strings: The album is our debut and contains 10 of our most popular original songs. Two were written by Darren Senn of Stateline, Nev., and the rest were written by us. They range from slow to fast to downright weird, but it is all music that all sorts of people can connect with and relate to.
TW: How did you approach the recording of this album?
RS: Mostly recorded live in the studio. A cooperative effort. Everybody’s input is an important piece of The Rusty String’s puzzle. We had the pleasure of recording locally at Bigwater Studios with Damon Gold an accomplished sound engineer.
TW: How did you guys decide on the album name?
RS: The name of the album comes from one of the songs (Fishmonger), and refers to a journey that Kurt Beckering (banjo) and Tyler Johnston (guitar) took in Thailand several years ago. There was a mind-blowing bus ride involved and a never ending melody that changed our lives. Since we believe it is the greatest song ever, we figured it was only appropriate to use it as the name of the album.
TW: You have such a large following in the Tahoe area. Do your CDs sell well around the area or where do you find they sell best?
RS: Cottonwood was a good place to sell CDs. We are hoping that word of mouth spreads and more folks will come to our shows and buy one. Even though it won’t be officially released until the CBC show on the 19th, the CD has been selling like flapjacks around the Tahoe area. Truckee, North Shore and South Shore fans have been buying them up.
TW: In the age of downloading music, how do approach selling CDs?
RS: Right now the album is for sale at shows and through our Web site www.therustystrings.com. It will soon be available for purchase digitally, but if you want the cool artwork, you have to buy the CD. It is available for download at CD baby. However the CD does sound better and is chalk full of great art and photography. Basically, the way we see it is; for the price of a beer or two, why not support the efforts of a local band?
TW: Where did your music inspiration come from on this CD?
RS: We find inspiration all over the place. Life experience. Traveling. Music from people like John Hartford and The Beatles.
TW: What do you love most about performing at the Crystal Bay Casino?
RS: The CBC is always packed full of people ready to get down and have a good time. It’s always a dance party there. The beauty of the CBC is that the crowd there loves music. That is why we’ve had some of our greatest shows there. Also, Blake and his crew dial the sound for us oh so perfectly.
TW: What direction do you hope to see the Rusty Strings headed in the next year? 5 years?
RS: We are hoping to start getting out of Tahoe a bit more, taking some small tours. We would love to start playing at more festivals as well. Also, there have been murmurs of a follow up recording project in the future.
TW: Please feel free to add anything else you would like.
RS: The album is printed on recycled cardboard and features art and photography by local artists. Check out the Web site at www.therustystrings.com to stay in touch. Get your dancing shoes polished up for April 19 at the Crystal Bay Casino for the Rusty Strings CD Release Party starting at 10 p.m. The free show will take place in the Red Room.
